    Wrong start for the pill?

    Hi

I was just prescribed Alesse and started taking in on the day I though I was was starting my period, (starting on day one of my cycle). It turns out it was just a bit of spotting, not my period. That was five days ago and I've continued to stay on the pills, but my period still hasn't started. I haven't been terribly regular the last year. Last month my period started on the 14th and when I spotted on the 12th this month, I though that was fine. I also don't usually spot, so I didn't doubt it. Today is now the 16th and my period still hasn't come. I did take a pregnancy test two days ago and it was negative.

So.... have I terribly screwed up things? Should my period still come this month? When will I be protected with the pill as far as contraception? Should I stop taking the pills this month (I've only taken 5 and am willing to throw this pack away), let my period come and then start on a new pack of pills? What should I do!?!?!?

    Thank you!

Your period probably won't start this month because you took it before your period actually started. Which, all in all, should be fine. I recommend being on the pill for 30 days, just to be safe, but some will say 7-14 days. There should be some information on the insert that came with your pill packet.

I wouldn't stop again and wait for your period because then your body is just going to be doing the WTF dance wondering what is going on with the absence of hormones.

If anything else, call your Dr for their opinion. But, if you use protection for a month, you should be fine, more than likely you'll start your period when you have completely finished with this pack anyways.

When I wanted to get on the pill for the third time I asked my doctor how would I know if it's spotting or period that I got, since I'm supposed to start it on the first day of the period. She told me that I should be "safe" by starting the pills even with spotting. I had the same doubts as you and it turned out alright.

You should continue taking your pills (at the same time, please, set your phone alarm for it), like Lana said, and you period should start on the last week of the pack. If you are worried about it avoid unprotected sex until the rest of the month, use a condom or just avoid intercourse, and you are going to be 99% protected at the start of your next pack.
