First Time Getting Birth Control Questions.
Alright, so i've decided it's time for me to go on the pill. I live in Canada, I just turned 19 and I don't have a doctor or anything. My friend told me I could go to the walk in clinic and get a prescription. Can I? I'd also like to know what kind of questions they'll ask. My sister told me her friend said they need look at your vagina before it's prescribed if you are sexually active (which I am). Is this true? And how much is a prescription about? I don't have any extra coverage. Also, is there anything else I need to know? Thanks in advance!! -
Hi! I know where I live you can go to a walk in clinic and get a prescription the Pill. When I took the pill I paid about $50 USD per month without insurance, but since you are young and probably don't make a lot of money there are a lot of programs for low income women to get the pill at a discounted rate. A friend of mine did so and paid about $10 USD per month. You will have to have a gynecological exam and pap smear to get the prescription though. They will ask if you are sexually active and about the regularity of your period. I'm sure they will want to discuss STD's with you as the pill provides no protection from these. It's really not bad going to get the meds, no big deal. Hope this helps!Last edited by themeximini; 10-22-2010, 06:49 PM. -
I live in Canada as well and not all walk-in clinics offer a prescription because they like to know their patients first and have a history taken etc. What you can do is go to your mom's GP doc and see if they are accepting new patients. Or you can google " (insert your province here) college of physicians and surgeons". Every single doc in practice in Canada has to be listed on this website. Once you find your provincial website you can see if doctors in your area are accepting new patients. As for the vaginal exam it is going to be highly recommended and yes some docs will not even prescribe unless you have had a pap smear done while being sexually active. Cost wise...not expensive. I mean I have basic school insurance and mine costs $3.50 a month. That is another thing, if you are in college or university you can use their health services to get pap smears or a doc to give you a prescription quite often. There are those who believe that dictionaries should not merely reflect the times but also protect English from the mindless assaults of the trendy.Comment

Hello, thanks you to everyone who responded. I went yesterday to walk in and was prescribed it without any hassle at all. He didn't do a pap smear but encouraged me to get one done. He asked what I wanted the pills for, if i had allergies, if i was taking any other prescriptions, if i was healthy, and if i was sexually active. That's it. I was probably only in there a few minutes. And the majority of it was him asking me which kind i'd like (which I had no clue hahaa).
As for the price, I was prescribed 28 day Alesse. It was 13 dollars for a generic brand and 18 for the name brand. I ended up getting the name brand because they didn't have the generic in stock.Comment
