    What Should I Do?

Alrighty, here is the situation. My period is 11 days late and yesterday I had a little bit but I am pretty sure it was just spotting. Now heres the thing, I am supposed to be starting birth control but I had to wait til my period to start it. I thought I had it yesterday so I took my first pill. But now all the bleeding has stopped. What do I do about the birth control? Because if I am pregnant, Im not supposed to be taking birth control.

Were you on birth control before you started to spot? Did you use protection the last time you had sex? Have you taken a pregnancy test yet?

Birth control is going to stop basically any period you were going to have, there may be some light spotting because your body needs to get used to the pill itself. Starting birth control after your period is said by doctors because it keeps your regular cycle basically the same as before you were taking the pill. In that case you will have already finished your period and since there is typically 3 weeks of active pills in a pack it would make it so the last week in the pills, the placebos, the time when your body would naturally have a period anyway...hence why the doctors recommend starting the pill right after your normal period because it makes it as though nothing has changed. If you take the pill at a random time in your cycle it will change your cycle pattern to follow the pill pack. So if you start your pills 2 weeks into your cycle then your period will be pushed back to whenever you start taking the placebo pills, the placebos are when you get your period.

Call the doctors office that gave the birth control pills.

The fastest thing you can do for yourself is go take a pregnancy test. They are generally 99% effective on the first day of your missed period (ie, 11 days ago) and their effectiveness only goes up from there. This will give you a fairly definitely answer about pregnancy, but afterwards you should still take stariana's advice and call up your prescribing doctor and explain the full situation to him/her and get advice.

Strictly, it doesn't REALLY matter when you start taking your BC pills. Patients are generally asked to start taking them during their period so that their body's rhythm isn't thrown off and the next period comes at the expected time, and so that the birth control can become effective more quickly. It's not the end of the world if you started the pills at the "wrong" time, but let your doctor know anyways.

The only way to know if you're pregnant, is to take a pregnancy test. Do that. It's the fastest thing you can do, and people on the internet aren't able to do it for you.

It could mean your period is coming on. It's hard to say, for sure, though. Take notes of your symptoms and speak with a dr if you do not get your period.
