what are my options????
Ok so i am pregnant now but i want to know what kind of birth control is right for me after i ahve my baby.i dont want to do the shot because thats what i was on.and i heard that the patch burns your skin really bad ( i dont know how true this is) can anyone help me out with any other forms of birth control besides the shot or condoms. -
Hi libralady.
Congratulations on your pregnancy. I hope it will be a happy and healthy one.
I've used the following types of birth control:
1. OrthoTriCyclen- Birth control pills. I didn't have any physical problems with them. For me, it was remembering to take them at the same time each day.
2. Ortho Evra- 'The Patch'. I used it for about a year thinking I wouldn't have to worry about forgetting pills. You wear each patch for a week and then have to change it, but sometimes I found it painful to remove, like getting a wax (lol). I was getting headaches and dizziness but wasn't sure why. I went for an annual physical and my blood pressure was very high, so my family doctor told me to stop using it. I would say be very careful about the patch, because the amount of hormone that it delivers through your skin is much higher than other birth control methods and there are many lawsuits against the manufacturer related to women getting blood clots. If you try it, as with any form of birth control, talk to your doctor about any unusual symptoms you may have.
3. I'm currently using Paraguard (non-hormonal IUD)- I've had it for a little over a year. A little uncomfortable getting it inserted, but I don't have to worry about hormones and it's always there, 'ready for action'
. It's good for ten years, but I'm not sure if I'll keep it that long. My biggest issue with my IUD is heavy periods, but I haven't had any other discomfort, so I'm sticking with it for now. If it doesn't work out, my next step will be to get a tubal ligation.
There are many other methods available. Remember that every woman is different, so what may not work so well for one may be the best for another. Just do your research and talk to your doctor before you make a choice.Last edited by alibaby; 11-08-2007, 02:41 PM. -
Hey alibaby
I did have to take the first one you mentioned 2 years ago for 3 months, to regulate my period. My first time taking birth control, it was fine except for the weight gain. I am also looking for something to use for probably a year or 2 after i have my baby, im just scared of the weight gain it comes with.Comment

Patricias213,
Many women have said the same thing about the weight gain, but I never had that problem. Birth control pills come in a variety of types and doses. Ask your gyn about the 'lo dose' pills, like OrthoTriCyclen Lo. These are supposed to have fewer side effects and less weight gain then the regular full dose pills, though I'm not sure if these claims are true.Comment
