    abnormal pap test

This morning I was awoken by a phone call from the gynecologist's office telling me I had abnormal cells in my pap test results. This is the first time I have ever had a pap test so this is a whole new experience for me. I have read that abnormalities could be cause by several different things. One thing I saw was a yeast infection, which I did have a bit of a yeast infection when I was at the gyno. I also saw impaired immune system listed, which I don't know if this means anything but at the time when I had this test done I was under and immense amount of stress and on a lot of antibiotics...does that classify my immune system as being impaired? I just don't know what to think...this is just adding more stress to the stress that I am already under because it is finals week at school and this is really just the last thing that I need. Has anyone else had any experience with this? Could the two things I mentioned be a possibility?

I have had 1 abnomal pap in 20 years- same thing abnormal cells, they did another pap 6 mo later, everything fine. I have not heard of the things you listed but I have heard that having sex 24 hrs before, too close to period, etc can show up, would make sense that yeast infection would throw it off. When do they want to see you again?

they want me to go in on jan 7 for a colposcopy and to biopsy some tissue, has anyone had this done? the word biopsy just sounds painful to me, i am really nervous about this and i wonder if anyone else has undergone this type of procedure?

All they are doing is testing that you don't have Cervical Cancer. Now, don't let that scare you because adnormalities are exactly that. So, they have to test just to make sure. If it is, it would be extremely low and the biopsy will show it up, as will the colposcopy... Simple method to clear it, and ensure you are safe, so again don't be stressed over that.

It is a simple proceedure, feels like a hard pinch... speak to the Doctor before hand and advise your fear, so that they can explain what happens, also have some one with you because it's only a little cut there, but enough to need a hug after.

You will feel a tad sore after and the coloposcopy basically cleans your body there, so you will bleed after, probably brown again don't worry that's normal, feel like your having a horrid period but all to ensure you are safe...

It is my understanding that it is a "day" thing, not hospitalised but by letting the Doctor know you suffer stress and will be a bit scared ask that they ensure they do numb you there before hand properly.. You won't feel a thing...

Thank you that makes me feel a lot better. I have already asked my friend to go with me and she joked about being there to hold my hand.

I've had colposcopies & biopsies. You're not alone. It's not that bad. Don't be afraid to ask your doc tons of ?s so you'll be more comfortable about what's happening. Once you get the results from those you'll know more and can go from there. Hang in there.
