Blood clots during a light period

I recently went back on the pill and completed my first pack. Considering i'm still getting used to taking it again, I accidentally missed a few days. 3 days ago I got my period.
Without the pill I have a pretty heavy flow, but with the pill it's lighter.
For some reason, however, the first day this time was pretty much spotting. The second day was light flow, and today, it's just a little heavier but still pretty light in comparison to what I normally experience on the pill.
The scary thing, though, is that I'm clotting much more than normal. Rarely I get very tiny clots, but today the blood was thicker and I even had a really big clot (definitely bigger than a quarter).
Could my changes in hormones be causing this? or the fact that I forgot to take the pill a few times?
Also, I never experience cramps while i'm on the pill, but today and yesterday I have had pretty painful cramps.

I've been on and off the pill for years and that happens sometimes to me with the pill. It also happened when I would change brands of birth control. Even when not on the pill- clots are completely normal. There are times when they are bigger than others. But if it makes you uncomfortable in any way or just doesn't seem right- you should ask your gyno.
