I've been on my period for about 2 and a half months now. It will stop for a couple of days here and there, but it is mostly a heavy flow. I saw my doctor and got an ultrasound, and I have a uterine fibroid. It is quite large and has caused my uterus to nearly double in size. My doctor put me on birth control to at least try to regulate my period, but it is not working. I've been taking the medication for 2 and a half weeks, and I'm still on a heavy flow. To make matters worse, the physical pain has become quite excrutiating. At times, I cannot even walk. It feels like my ovaries are being crushed. I've spoken with my doctor about all of this, and she said that I need to give the medication more time, and that, as far as the pain is concerned, there really isn't anything that can be done short of a hysterectomy. With the tumor being non-cancerous, my insurance company considers the hysterectomy an "elective surgery" and will not cover it, and the continuous bleeding is making me feel very weak. Has anyone been through this? Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I can't think of anything to say that would help really. I am not a doctor. But I might want to get a second and even a third opinion. I feel your pain. Take care.

That's unfortunate as there is little that can be done without a hysterectomy. What kind of BC pill does she got you on. If I remember right, they recommend a low dose estrogen or progestin only pill.

I'd give the pill at least a month. But again talk to her after that month if it hasn't helped. If needed, get a second opinion.

I'm taking Necon 7/7/7. It is a low-dose birth control pill. She said that it is supposed to fool my body into believing it is already pregnant so that it will stop producing the type of estrogen that these tumors feed on, and it is supposed to get my menstral flow on a normal cycle. It has done nothing to stop my bleeding, and my physical pain has actually gotten worse since I've started taking it.

If you are in that much pain, I'd call and try talking to her again. If the only advice she can offer you is to give it more time, consider getting a second opinion.

Like you said, the continuous bleeding is making you weak. In the meantime, don't take any type of ibuprofen for the pain, it thins your blood and could possibly you bleed more.

I spoke to my doctor yesterday, and she ordered another blood test (since I've been bleeding heavily and continuously for almost 3 months now, might as well draw some blood). She referred me to a specialist, and I am that appointment tomorrow morning. Thank you for your advice.
