HPV Question
So I contracted HPV last year, had the LEEP procedure and my recent Pap came back as normal. My question is if I have unprotected sex with the person that i was having sex with when i originally contracted HPV will it make the condition worse or reappear?

to dawn9800 re; leep
hi dawn, i'm obnurse. just to answer your question. a LEEP is used when your pap comes back showing dysplasia (or cell changes) that could result later in cancer. there are usually 3 first steps 1) a cryo- the dr. freezes the affected cells using a machine in his office then the cells die and sluff off not painful at all, 2) conization- the dr. uses a knife to cut off the affected part of your cervix- can increase preterm labor but no where near the amount a leep can cause, and finally 3) leep procedure- the only difference in this and #2 "the cone", is that the dr, uses an electrical wire to get rid of this portion of your cervix. high incidence of preterm labor with this and if the dr. does it in his office-well RUN-very painful. a good dr. will go for the cryo 1st if possible and then repeat pap in 3-6 mths. and go from there to more aggressive methods. hope this gave you some of what you wanted to know. one other thought and i know this to be true because some of my husbands partners do this- but not my husband, the leep machines cost quite alot and if the dr. chooses to purchase one for the office instead of doing it in the outpatient at the hospital, it has to be paid for, right? well guess who's paying for it-the patients that are talked into this procedure when there are other less painful options with fewer side effects- such as preterm labor or consecutive miscarriages- but trust me they are making alot more with the leep than the cryo. sad huh? well bye, obnurseComment
