    D&C

I'm scheduled to have a D&C tomorrow due to miscarriage. Just wondering if anyone has been through something similar and what to expect after the proceedure. Thanks

Usually, it is done under general anesthesia, but in some cases in local anesthesia - it's up to the anesthesiologist, the surgeon and you to decide which works best for you. Do you want to have a twilight sleep while undergoing the procedure?

If you're going through general anesthesia, you could go home later the same day - that's what I did when I had my BTL. With spinal or epidural blocks, it would take more time for the anesthesiologist to do, and would require you more recovery time.

Vaginal bleeding and pelvic cramping are some normal things that you'll experience post-op. Pelvic cramping is somewhat similar to menstrual cramps. Aside from that, there are no other reports that are alarming. But should you experience extreme pain or any unusual bleeding or discomfort, call your physician/surgeon.

You have to watch your symptoms closely. Look up D &C in the net to find out more.

I'm sorry you've had to deal with a miscarriage.

I had a D&C a little over a year ago. In my case it was along with an ablation, to stop nonstop bleeding. I'd had a D&C some years before, don't even remember why, probably related to abnormal paps in some way.
It wasn't a big deal. No choice - no local. If you twitch or something it could be a problem. I went home a few hours later. They gave me a bunch of pain pills - vicodin I think, they are still in the med chest, only took them the first 24 hours. There was some discharge for a week or so. I rested for a couple days, that was it.

I'm sure you'll soon be right as rain.

I had one too, actually almost exactly a year ago.

I went home three hours later. I did also get pain pills, codeine, as well as 800mg Motrin. I took the codeine the first day, after that, Motrin or Tylenol were fine. A little crampy for a few days, but good.

Oh, I was also under general when they did it.

Sorry to hear about the miscarriage, that's unfortunate.

        Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the support everyone. I'm finding it hard to take in everything that is happening right now.

I've never had anything like this done before and it looks like my boyfriend is not going to be able to come with me. From experience how long after am I still going to be feeling the effects and when can I return to normal activities. I know these are questions I should have asked my Dr. but was too much in shock at the time to process anything.

I'd give yourself a good couple of days to just relax and let your body rebound from everything that has happened.

They'll probably tell you no intercourse for 2 weeks as well or until your follow up appt.
