    heavy period

Sunday afternoon I started to have serious menstrual cramps. Typically, I only have cramps the day I start my period and they're really not that painful. These were moderate to excruciating. The cramps continued but I never started my period until Tuesday morning. Once I started, it came extremely heavy. I've had to change my tampon every 2-3 hours, sometimes less. Almost everytime I've bled through. There were small clots, which I've never really had but that didn't worry me. Yesterday I started to notice larger clots of blood. My period is still just as heavy with a ton of clots.

I'm really worried. My periods are typically 3-4 days with slight cramping and a moderate flow. Its never been heavy before. What could this mean? How long should I wait before going to the doctor?

Also, I'm not sure if this is related, but last week after having sex with my boyfriend I had light bleeding that night and the following morning, but that was it. That's never happened to me before, but I wasn't really concerned at the time.

I'm 24 years old, no kids. I stopped taking birth control over 3 years ago.

The blood has now gone from a dark to a bright red.

Was your period late or on time? The answer to that could be important. I have a hunch but it's not a guarantee and it's not good news so if your period was on time, I don't want to upset you for no reason. And yes you should go to a doctor if you can
