I have been under anesthesia before for another medical procedure, it all works in the same general way (the difference is of course in which drug used to put you to sleep).

Literally this is how it goes:
    - Get into the hospital bed
    - They take your general stats, blood pressure, heart rate...etc. No big deal.
    - They give you your IV in your hand. This really does not hurt, small pinch and its over with. The nurses are very good at what they do so no need to worry.
    - You get carted into the OR.
    - You are spoken to by the doctor, he/she is likely just going to reassure you that this will be over in no time and it will go great.
    - They then switch your IV med to the anesthetic
    - They tell you count down from 10.
    - You make it to 9, and right when you are about to say 8 you are out cold.
    - You wake up feeling like it has been 30 seconds when really it is X amount of time the surgery took.
    - Ask for pain meds from doctor because of the surgery procedure.

thanks for replying. im not at all worried about the op at all. i dont like iv line so i have heard that i can ask for a mask with the drug in the mix to put me to sleep then they would do the iv when im out. i think i just cant wait for it to be over and home! i know what there going to do but with me NEVER having a op just really nervous i cant stop thinking about it thanks

Fear, that's all it is Your not frightened of the op, or any associated pain that may occur, your frightened that you have no control, that your being put to sleep and that scares you...

That's normal, although for me, it's the needle, I have a fear of needles...

You'll be fine, perhaps ask if you can take a muscle relaxant before you go in, so your not so anxious?

i have been told that i will not be put to sleep to the extent that i will need a breathing tube. it will have a oxygen mask to help me breath which is not as bad i think lol

Oh no you wont be put on a ventilator. This is just a basic anesthetic that is routinely used. The gas is actually nitrous oxide, some people call it laughing gas...it just calms you down. Then they would give you the IV like you said, so really if that method was done you won't even feel the needle.

If you have a premedical condition it should have already been addressed with your doctor. That way they can prep you for surgery with any additional solutions so that your body reacts totally normal when put under. I had to have this done, just some extra electrolytes in my case so again no big deal...for me it was just an extra 20 minutes with an IV in my arm before surgery.

also do you wake up with the IV in your hand or do they take it out before you go back on the ward?

You will likely wake up with it in your hand, incase they need to give you more fluids for whatever reason. Taking it out hurts much much less than it going in. And you will be groggy when you wake up so you likely will not even have much of a reaction when they take it out because they do it quickly.
