Constant bleeding going on 9 months- help!

I had my first period when I was 11 years old. My periods came on a relatively predictable schedule, and though they were very heavy and accompanied by painful cramps, they were pretty normal. After the first year or so, they started to get way off track and eventually stopped coming.
At 12 years old, I had an approximate 7 months with no periods at all. After that, I had another cycle of mostly normal periods. Again, they were extremely heavy and I had cramps that would keep me in bed most of the time.
Fast forward a few years- at about 16 I had a period that lasted about 4 months. After the first month of continuous bleeding, I saw my pediatrician. I was told that it was not really that unusual, that she would be more concerned if I wasn't having a period at all, but if it REALLY bothered me, she could refer me to an endocrinologist.
It took me a couple of months to get in to see her because of the waiting list, but when I did finally get in, the problem was still persisting. She subjected me to a battery of expensive tests over the course of a month or two and I can't remember all of them, but I do remember being tested for insulin resistance, diabetes, various hormonal imbalances, and even sleep apnea. She gave me a brief physical examination looking for symptoms of PCOS (patches of hair, dark patches of skin, etc).
That particular doctor never did find out what was wrong with me- but she did put me on birth control. Because of my incredibly forgetful nature, I opted for the patch. Yes, Ortho Evra did regulate my cycle- mostly. But once my 12-month prescription ran out, so did my insurance. I couldn't afford the patch or the doctor visits after that.
For a while, my periods were regular on their own. Several months passed with no issues at all. Of course, that was short lived.
For the next 9 months or so, I had no periods. I took many pregnancy tests, and at one point some severe abdominal cramping sent me to the emergency room. I remember their incredulous looks when they asked me for the date of my last period. "Are you pregnant?" the nurse asked me. Nope, not pregnant. They gave me a pelvic exam which turned up nothing and sent me on my way.
Eventually, my period returned. Back and forth, I had weeks or months of bleeding followed by weeks or months of nothing.
In October 2011, I started my period. It's been almost 9 months since then and I am still bleeding. Several times I've been dizzy and pale, only to go to the bathroom and realize that I'm pouring blood. A few weeks ago, I again returned to the emergency room (a different one). This time, it was due to sharp, stabbing, intense pain in my pelvis. It felt like someone was driving a knife into my cervix. I've never had children, but it felt like what I imagine contractions would feel like. The waves of excruciating pain would cause my eyes to water, and knock the breath from my lungs.
Again, the doctor gave me a pelvic exam. She suspected Chlamydia or Gonorrhea. She gave me Flagyll to treat it (although the test results hadn't come back yet, she said it was better to just treat it since the medication wouldn't hurt me if I didn't have either disease) and some shot I can't remember the name of that was injected into my hip. The test results ended up being negative (which was exactly what I predicted- I've only been with my boyfriend for the last three years and even we haven't been having sex because of the fact that I've been on my period for 9 months!).

This has been a long, terrifying and lonely experience for me. I don't have anyone to talk to about it that could even remotely relate to my problem. My boyfriend has been as understanding and supportive as he could possibly be- but how could he really understand what's happening to me? I want to be intimate with him but I feel disgusting all of the time. I don't feel like a woman. I worry that I may never be able to have children. I have horrible hot flashes and have to sleep directly in front of a fan, yet I still wake up clammy and sweaty. I feel a constant need to shower. I frequently go in the shower or drive around crying because it's the only time I can be alone and I have some strange need to hide my sadness from everyone.
I don't have any health insurance, and I don't have any money. It's been so hard for me to find a job that will even put food on the table, let alone pay any bills. I work under the table for about $3 an hour, about 40 hours a week. When I'm not working, I apply for jobs. I've made many phone calls searching for an OBGYN clinic that will even see me without insurance (no luck yet!). The health department won't see me unless it's for family planning or an STD. Planned Parenthood does pelvic exams for $60, and I'm sure I could find some way to come up with that money, but I just had a pelvic exam done that solved nothing. I'm afraid and mistrustful of doctors. Whenever I'm in a doctor's office I get nervous and I can't articulate what's wrong with me. Most of the time I feel like they don't care at all.

I'm lost and I don't know what to do. Please, someone just give me some advice!

    Hey there,

I am very sorry that you have to go through all of these since your childhood and still haven't found the answers and solutions yet. How I wish I could help, but I am just a medical student. But, what I could try to do to help you is, tomorrow morning, if I had the chance after my classes, I will try to ask a few of my doctors at our hospital about your problems. Hopefully they can give us some info about this matter.

I read each and every word that you wrote, but, I think, I need to know more details (because my doctors won't be satisfied if it's not complete; these questions are kind of lengthy and might be related or not to your problem):
    - So, your main complain is : continous period for 9 months and recently accompanied with stabbing abdominal pain starting 3 weeks ago - is this correct?
    - as for this stabbing abdominal pain, I have to know more about it :
--> what is the exactly original site?
--> you said it started 3 weeks ago, did it start suddenly painful or slowly and gradually becoming worse by? does the pain come and go, or you feel it all the time?
--> you said it is sharp, stabbing, and intense - right?
--> does the pain radiate to anywhere else on your body? if so, when, after a few hours or days?
--> does the pain become better/worse with food intake, or there's no relation to food? does the pain awaken you from your sleep at night? does coughing/ straining/ laughing worsen the pain? does the pain persists even at rest? does the pain become better/worse with any specific position (like rolling, bend your body forward, laying flat and didn't move, etc)?
    - have you had any history of bleeding anywhere else on your body (nosebleeding/ blood in stool/ blood or reddish urine/ prolonged bruises that take longer time to heal)? anyone in your family has history of bleeding disorders? have you been diagnosed previously with any chronic illnesses like diabetes or hypertension? do you smoke, drink alcohol, take some specific drugs and medications? you said, the last time you had sex was 9 month ago, right?
    - if you know, anyone in your family has been diagnosed with any chronic illnesses? cancers? any genetic diseases that run in your family?
    - because you have had this problem since you were young, I have to ask, did you mother experienced any problems during her pregnancy? took any specific drugs, smoking, or she ate certain kinds of food in excess?
    - you said your doctors did several tests to you, you may think these are not important and waste of money; but, no, they don't. It is true that you doctor still couldn't find the answers, but I believe she had managed to rule out some other possible causes that she thought could be. Can you tell me the results in brief?
    - and how old are you, and where do come from?
    - any other complains that have been bothering your mind that you haven't written here? or you probably have some ideas what is wrong with your body, what do you think it could be?

For this mean time, the least I could is to pray the best for you. You are not alone. Take care, biloa.

    Yours,
    Electric.

Google or Bing both of these

        "hyperplasia"

        and

        " fibroids" in Uterus

One quarter to one half of women with fibroids have symptoms from them. The most common symptoms include:

        Heavy, prolonged menstrual bleeding
Severe pain or cramping during menstrual periods
        Pelvic pain or pressure
        Urinary frequency
        Back pain
        Pain during sexual intercourse
Complications with pregnancy (infertility or miscarriage)

Also Google a place called UCSF Comprehensive Fibroid Center. Read thru that and have pen & paper and make a list of symptoms that match what you read .

Get on the Phone, call every Health Clinic you can find, Low income ones, Call every Church ( Catholic Community Services is a good place to Start ) and every Woman's Health place, even Uterine Cancer places. It is Possible.. Not Trying to Scare you, but the Fibroid's in Uterus, could be Cancerous or Pre Cancerous . So Determining that is a Big Issue, and One thing to mention as a " Possible Illness " when talking to these Help Sites .* Listed Below *

One site has this on it ..

What if I do not qualify for these government programs?

Some uninsured women make too much money to qualify for government assistance but cannot afford to pay for health insurance or costly medical care. This is a difficult situation for women and their families. There are options for women in this situation, including:

Free clinics. Free clinics provide services for the working poor and uninsured. Usually, people who qualify for Medicare, Medicaid or who can afford private insurance do not qualify for care in free clinics. The Free Clinic Foundation of America publishes a National Directory of Free Clinics. To access the directory, visit this website.( I Removed so as not to Link it, But Search National Directory of Free Clinics )

Prescription drug assistance. Some states provide prescription drug assistance to women who are not covered by Medicaid. Also, many drug companies will work with your doctor or health care provider to supply free medicines to those in need. For prescription drug resources, go to this website.

Women with cancer. Women who are coping with cancer can find help through many government-sponsored and volunteer organizations. For example, Cancer Care provides free support, information, financial help, and practical help to people with cancer and their families. Low-income and underserved women with breast and cervical cancers can get help with transportation, child care, and home care from the AVONCares Program. For more information and a list of more resources, contact the National Cancer Institute.

Women with HIV. The federal Ryan White CARE Act funds services for those with HIV/AIDS who have little or no insurance and limited income. For information about the Ryan White Care Act, go to Health Resources and Services Administration website. Contact your local or state health department to locate a CARE provider in your area. Resources also can be found at AIDS website.
Low-cost health insurance options. Some labor unions, professional clubs, associations, and organizations offer private group health insurance to its members. These plans usually are less costly and may be an option to consider.
State temporary insurance. Some who have been denied health insurance because of a medical condition may be able to obtain coverage through State "High Risk Pools." More than 30 states provide this temporary insurance assistance. For more information, visit this website.

This is if you lost your Insurance Recently ( within 18 months ) From a Job ..

How can I protect my health insurance benefits?

If you are losing your health insurance due to job loss or reduced hours, there are some important steps you should take. Women and their dependent children who lose their health insurance through divorce or death also are entitled to the following protection.

Get proof of previous health insurance coverage from your employer. This assures certain protections and rights under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, or HIPAA. Basically, HIPAA protects employed individuals and their families who are insured by continuing access to health insurance when leaving or changing jobs. For more information about HIPAA and how it affects you and your family, go to HIPAA website.
You may be able to continue your group health insurance coverage under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985, or COBRA. Generally, employers with 20 or more employees are subject to COBRA and must allow you the option to continue your health insurance benefits for at least 18 months after leaving your job. You will have to pay more than when you were employed because you also must pay the premium costs your employer used to pay for you. But you will receive the same health benefits while you look for another job or until you buy health insurance. In some cases, you can apply for health insurance continuance after using up your COBRA coverage through your state-mandated "High-Risk Pool" Insurance.

In most cases, there are strict time limitations in which to apply for benefits. So act quickly to get the right information and file the forms required in order to protect you and your family's health insurance.

You don't mention what State you are in ? But with the USA, these #'s should help. At least the Broad ones ,but you can still call the others, for Referral #'s in your State

          - The pain I was experiencing eventually went away. I don't know if it is/was related to my bleeding problem, or even if it was the medication that helped. It felt like it was in my cervical area but I can't really be sure. Any kind of physical strain definitely worsened the pain and I had to sit and sleep in certain positions to avoid triggering a wave of pain.
          - I've never had any odd bleeding that I'm aware of and I don't bruise very easily.
          - I have not been diagnosed with any chronic illnesses, diabetes runs in my family and my sister has had fertility issues but I don't know what they specifically are.
          - I smoke about half a pack of cigarettes a day, drink alcohol rarely, and don't take any drugs or medication.
          - As far as I know, my mother's pregnancy went smoothly. She does not smoke or drink.
          - The doctor tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea, both tests were negative.
          - I'm 21, and live in Florida.
          - I don't really know anything about what's happening to me, of course I've attempted to do some research on the web but there are too many possible causes for me to really have a good idea.
          - It's pretty difficult for me to know which of my various issues are related. I've been getting painful bumps on my inner thighs and the skin there is dark. I also noticed a lump in my breast a while back that's gotten smaller over time but it's still there. Before I started bleeding continuously this most recent time, sex could be slightly painful and seemed to trigger a very light period.

Thanks for the support! I'm working on finding a doctor I can go visit, my dad recommended one to me that works out payment plans with uninsured people and has many different types of doctors in their practice. Please let me know if you find anything out!

            to BabyGirl:

Thanks for the advice, my symptoms do seem to match those of uterine fibroids. Hopefully it's nothing that serious!

BUT BUT, my seniors who live with me will be back here today (they went home for the hols), they might have some answers too (or maybe not, I don't know, )

              Till then, take care :]

                Hey jetjet,

I know you are afraid and been thinking of something bad is happening to you, but personally, when a doctor said it's nothing, I think it's probably nothing. But, probably you have other symptoms that have been worrying you? not only the bleeding? pain etc. etc?

How I wish that we have doctors in this forum that could help answering your problem and others.

                For now, take care, jetjet!
