18 and still irregular - requires reassurance

I am 18 and a half years old and i first started my period when i was 12. I have never been regular except once last year for a few months. I often miss months but never more than 2-3 a year and never following each other. However, neither have i had my period last month, nor has it decided to appear this month, hence why i've recently become worried. Despite the irregularity, i've had no problems otherwise.

So, my question is, are some women just never regular?
Or should i consult a doctor about using the pill to regulate my cycle? (I'm very reluctant to see one)

    Thank you

P.S. I've never had sex, nor am i over or underweight, and i'm also not incredibly tall or short, if that accounts to anything.

Yes the weight does account to something. And yes, some women are never regular but 18 isn't the age to be worried about it yet. If you're still irregular when you're in your early twenties, that might be a sign of hormonal issues. But for now, don't fret too much about it.

If it were me, I would learn to chart. It's a skill that is extremely valuable as it teaches a woman SO much about her cycle, but also allows you the information you need to discuss with a doctor issues you're having.

Many women think they are "irregular" until they start charting their basal body temps and then they are able to really look at what's going on. For instance, there are many things that can cause a delayed ovulation. If ovulation is delayed, period will be delayed as well. It is also important to know if you are ovulating then not having a period, or just not ovulating at all on those months. Charting would tell you that as well.

I recommend doing a bit of research on "Fertility Awareness Method" and "Charting basal body temps" and go from there. Then after you've charted for a few months and learned what your temps mean, it may be a good idea to chat with a doctor about it. Our reproductive systems are something to take seriously, no matter the age. Going to a gyn the first time is a bit nerve wrecking.....of course. But ask other women for referrals of who to go to, and find someone you can really get comfortable with. Learn that whether sexually active or not, a gyn is a necessary part of your life.

I would caution you that many doctors will recommend bc to regulate periods. However, for me, I found that the side effects I experienced resulting from hormonal BC were NOT worth it.
