Hi! I'm seventeen years old and I have a rare type of hymen called a septate hymen meaning that my hymen actually vertically divides my vaginal opening into two different holes. No I don't have two vaginas just two holes to the same one. Look up a picture/diagram of you are still confused. This isn't my problem however. I have seen a gynecologist and I have a scheduled septumectamy for sometime in July. However last week my boyfriend was fingering me and somthing happened. I started to bleed. I lost so much blood that I could barely stand or see at one point. I rinsed in the shower and my boyfriend made sure I didnt hurt myself. I put on a pad and took it easy for a while. And after that continued on with my day. After the incident I had some minimal soreness and continued to wear a pad as some minimal bleeding also continued for a few days. Now that it is no longer bleeding I've been trying to asses what's happened. I think my septate hymen may be thinner than it was and I can also see some cuts but I'm not sure if it has teared at all it's hard to tell. My septate hymen is For sure. Should I be worried? Should I tell someone? I cannot tell my mom about this in detail so would it be believable to say I yanked a tampon out and it got caught? Or should I wait to see if the gyno asks about it or even notices for that matter? I'm lost on this one

    Hi sweet.

I am wondering, are you a virgin? Perhaps he actually broke your hymen.

I understand you don't wish to discuss these things with your Mother but purely advising how you are feeling should be enough concern for her to want you to be checked out.

I think if it was a simple thing like a cut, you would see bright red blood and it would stop.
It think anytime anyone feels like the want to pass out from blood lose, they should get themselves straight away to a Doctor.

Yes I am a virgin! And my septate hymen is still intact. I bleed bright red right after the incident I continued to wear a pad because I had a little of that brownish blood (kind of like at the end of a period) for a few days. I know I probably should've seen a doctor then and there but I mean we're just kids we were scared. I just don't know what to do now. I'm wondering if I wait until I go and get my septumectamy if there will still be cuts or if my gyno will even notice. And if she does will she tell my mom?

        Don't worry. You'll be just fine :]

I had the same exact issue when I was around your age. I was a virgin and was using a tampon for the first time, and had no idea I had a septate hymen. It went in just fine, but because tampons expand inside the vagina, I couldn't get it out. I was alarmed when I got a mirror and looked to see what was blocking it, and saw a band of flesh stretched across the tampon. I was so embarrassed and it was in the middle of the night, and I had to cut and tear the hymen myself to get the tampon out, and I had quite a bit of bleeding for a few days after that (realistically, I should have just had the tampon removed at the ER and had the septum cut there, but I was only about 16 and I was very freaked out and really needed to get the tampon out. I totally understand being scared out about seeing a doctor.) I had the septumectamy a few weeks later, and they never mentioned the cutting/tearing. It didn't really matter since the tissue was being removed anyway.

I think you're okay now, as long as the bleeding has stopped, but AVOID tampons and any sexual activity for a little while. Even after the septumectamy, because they use absorbable sutures which can be a little uncomfortable. It's tough for blood to clot in a moist area like the vagina, so bleeding there is no good and hard to stop.

It sounds like what you're really worried about is your mom knowing that you were intimate with your boyfriend. I remember my OBGYN telling me that it was common for people with obstructive or septate hymens to have scarring and tearing from tampon use. If you're uncomfortable with talking about being fingered by your boyfriend, you can say a tampon got stuck. I know from experience that getting a tampon stuck on a septate hymen causes a lot of bleeding and tearing. Realistically, it probably won't even come up, and the scarring itself isn't an issue. If the OBGYN does notice, she probably won't think much of it.

Thank you this was very helpful! I can't believe you actually had to cut it yourself eekkk! Lucky for me every time I get it stuck on a tampon I can simply slide it over and pull the tampon out just fine. I figured they wouldnt say anything when I went in for surgery its just slightly awkward because my obgyn works at a hospitle with my mom. Anyways thanks for the advice I had kind of figured out most of it on my own but it was good to hear it from someone else still alittle bummed though because my surgerys not until July and my boyfriends leaving for school in August
