    Vaginal Itch

alright, well i am 18 years old, and i have been having this "Itch" for quiet some time now. It Itches at the "Vaginal Opening", and near the anus. And i mean it itches, so much to the point where i go pee, I itch with the toilet paper and then i itch so much i start to bleed...then when i go pee later it burns cause i got a cut (from itching so much). The itching is most severe first thing in the morning and at night when i'm trying to sleep. i have thought of numerous things that could be causing it.
possibly the fact that it is hereditary because my mother suffers from the exact same symptoms and had been for years and then recently it just ended for her. or possible something in my diet because it worsens after i pee or poop. so i completely cut out gluten from my diet to give that a shot.
or maybe even something hormonal, because it worsens before, during, and after my period.
i have also been taking fish oil, and primerose tablets in the mornings in hopes that it may be due to dry skin.

either way i really need some help because i really can't take this any longer. i find myself so frustrated and angry because i feel so helpless. my mother said that she has seen numerous doctors and specialists for this but none of them have had answers.
i've made an appointment with a naturopath. but until then there must be SOMETHING I CAN DO to lessen the itching or someone out there who has experienced what i am going through and found a solution to make it stop.

    thank you ladies!!

If this reply from Katarina stays up - please do NOT wash yourself with toothpaste.

There are a number of conditions that cause this type of scratch/itch cycle and it is a cycle. You scratch because it itches, it itches because you scratch. The conditions range from pruitis to lichen sclerosis. They will each have a similar yet different course of treatment. The main thing is to keep absolutely clean using a light un-scented soap and water, dabbing the area not wiping. Sometimes an antibiotic cream will be required to heal any broken skin. Sometimes an anti-fungal cream is necessary to get rid of bacterium on the skin, and there are other creams such as betamethasone and clobetasol which will help alleviate the itching. Lichen sclerosis in particular can be an on-going life-long condition and you will want to know if this is what you have as there are other special steps you may need to know.

Lichen Sclerosis is thought to be an auto-immune disease of the skin that affects the peri-anal area. It is not an STD

I should hope not! Antifungal cream only kills fungus (yeast). If there's bacteria you need an antibiotic!

Sorry my fingers didn't keep up with my thoughts. it should have read "Antifungal cream and bacterial cream to get rid of bacterium on the skin". Thanks for catching that. I think I was most concerned that she would use toothpaste to clean herself.

Sure! I know, I'm just a pedant about such things (like people using antibacterial sprays to try and kill viruses...) basic Biology fails flag up in neon lettering for me. Cleaning your lady bits with toothpaste? Ugh that's definately not a good way to go.

I'm 18 too! And I have the same problem. My mom said it might be the soap, shaving cream, or lotions I use. But I notice it more now right before my period. Which has been a week late for the past 2 months. I also notice discharge from my vagina that smells yeasty, so I assume it's linked to a yeast infection. I used vagisil and it helped me right away. I don't know if that's the right product for you though... That might irritate your areas more.
I don't know if that helps. But good luck. I know how you feel- and it is definitely not fun.

Perhaps u have seen the chronic bv thread started in 2006. Quite long, but you can choose esp. from the recent tips in the newer posts wc might help. I thought the boric acid caps have had research done and have quite helped some ladies, as well as probiotics. Douching, i understand doesnt really help, except w/ white or acvinegar, the latter taken internally w/ water daily too. It also has pH of 4.5, same as women's vj so i understand that's why its safe as douche.

Hormones may have something to do w/ it, but whatever it is, i suggest see a doc/obgyne first to have lab test if u need something for bacteria or fungi. Your condition will also be monitored and findings recorded, so u have something to look back to if it recurs. Your history of prescriptions and what 'worked' and didnt work would help a lot, and its real hard to self diagnose and do trial and error. This way u dont spend unnecessarily on something not needed, and the meds no longer have an effect (is that efficacy?!) on the organisms when we need them. Sorry, i only have mins. online now. But hope that helps.
