It's near time for me to take my 2nd shot for Depo, and I'm wondering if this is normal. I've taken a pregnancy test and it came out negative (though I've read that when on Depo, that kinda doesn't matter), and the discharge doesn't really smell...it actually smells more like blood than anything else, so I have my doubts of it being an infection. What's going on? Should I freak or no?

Brown discharge...what's goin' on???
Hi, I'm 19, currently on the Depo shot, and am sexually active. Lately (for about a week or so), I've been having this weird brown discharge. I have period cramps (and it's actually around the time I get my normal period, though because of the shot, I have ceased to bleed for the past 2-3 months). When I insert a tampon and then take it after a couple of hours, I also see very small amounts of regular red blood.

Hi
The depo injection is different for many women, some bleed all the way through and other not at all. I was on it for about 4 years and decided to come off it due to weight gain. At the start I had the same as you, the cramping although only slight and a brown show at the time of my period. After a few months it stopped and I didn't bleed or 'show' at all. It sounds pretty normal to me but if you're worried speak to your doctor when you go for your next shot. I'm sure they'll put your mind at rest.

It sounds like its just old blood that's still making its way out. If you're not cramping then your body isn't trying to push it out. You can always call a nurse at the clinic you go to for the Depo and talk to her over the phone. She knows all the right questions to ask to determine if its something to be concerned about.
