Most STDs will show up within a few weeks although some can be asymptomatic and that is why getting checked is a good idea. I don't know that telling your lover, a year into the relationship, that you want both of you tested for STIs is going to go over really well. Instead tell him that his penis feels different and that he should get checked and that for both your good health you are going to get a well woman check up and be tested for any possible infections.
