How common is it to use lube?
Until I came to this forum I never heard of lubricant-like the kind you would buy in a store. But it's mentioned in many, many posts here so I'm guessing it must be pretty common. My husband and I have never used it, I can't recall ever being not wet enough. In fact while taking a particular brand of birth control, I was constantly too wet (yes, there is such a thing). Is it really that widely used? Do you use it? What do you use it for? Do women become dryer with age? Is it just topical or does it go inside? I even read somewhere a couple uses it for oral sex, can i ask why not saliva? Wouldn't saliva work better? I'm not criticizing, I realize this is a very naive question, but I have no experience with this and I'm curious. -
There is no harm in using lubricants. Fact of matter is that they enhance the whole experience. Preferably start with water based ones, and then you can proceed to other types for different experiences. Saliva is also good for on the spot fixing, however, kindly bear in mind that the human mouth has more germs than the rectum. Having an odorless water based lubricant works wonders and gives you the control you need. I can speak for females that with age there is some effect on how much you produce your own natural lube but it also depends on your diet and how much stress you have been in lately. I would not advise it for oral sex, but you can use it for vaginal and certainly should use it for anal. Just make sure that if you are using protection for your self then the type of lube should not react with it. Hence water based natural ones are the best. Happy testing

Great question. I've wondered about this too. One of my buddies told me to try it out to enhance the experience a long time ago. We tried it and it didn't do anything for us. I just assumed he wanted to rush things. Then I come here and wonder.
I do have a frustrating time entering sometimes, but it's all about technique."Those sowing seed with tears
Will reap with a joyful shout." - Psalm 126Comment

Good info, thanks! CB, you're always a wealth of information. I don't plan to use it, I'm just curious about why its so popular. I prefer to use my mouth to lubricate my husband and vice versa. That's such a fun part of sex. I didn't think about germs, I guess that's a concern if you're with a partner you don't know well. And I didn't think about anal, since we don't do it, so I guess there are uses for it. I also wonder about the rushing of things.Comment

Yes you can use Saliva in a 1 to 1 relationship, but it helps a lot with another partner or if more are involved. You can test lubrication during foreplay. With a considerate partner(s) rushing of things should not become an issue even when lube is used. I have sent you a PM for some other reasons why lube is not an alternative but a necessity

Lots of reasons: Some women don't get wet enough even when aroused (and probably gets worse with age). Some couples like the feel better. Sometimes its good when you are both rushed. Sometimes some women like being penetrated very early if there is lube to make it comfortable (maybe a "ravish me" sort of thing). Its good for fingers and toys, and required for anal.
I don't know how common it is, but it is sold in many varieties in all adult toy shops. Most commonly it would be put on fingers, penis or toys before penetration.Comment

HG, you are lucky that you lubricate so well. A lot of women do not, even after many orgasms.
Saliva is a thin lubricant that dries out if the session lasts very long. Therefore it needs to be reapplied often. Some people get turned off from its application.
Finding a store bought lubricant of the right thickness (viscosity) can take a bit of searching, but it is ultimately rewarding to many. It also is actually more spontaneous than going to the bathroom and brushing your teeth and tongue is if you want to have middle of the night wake up sex (if your breath is not horrible but is not exactly fresh).I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience.
