Have your parents helped you out at all in trying to find a man? Have they set you up with anybody, and if they did, were those guys of the same morals as you?
One of my best friends' families is from Mumbai. She's got a lot of the same troubles as you - her mother is practically having hissy fits because she hasn't gotten herself married off yet, but she has a hard time finding a man who meets her standards and isn't a sleaze. Her mother isn't really helping her either.
She has had some luck with meeting men through her extended family - she has spent a lot of time in different areas of the country so her "dating pool" isn't as thin as it might be if she stayed in one place. She has also met some men online, but it doesn't always turn out - you may find out later rather than sooner that a man is a creep.
Of course, if you aren't interested in finding a man right now - keep stalling, put the phone on silent, and take a deep breath. Your mom won't have a heart attack if you aren't married off in the next three years! She might just threaten to

I'm on a bunch of dating sites, and I've met one date through my group of friends. Even though I've met some creeps, it's been a positive learning experience. You get a better sense of who you are, what you like and you learn about dating/relationships.

Eh, my parents tend to choose guys that I'm not attracted to. JNS-Money, family of origin, and status is what they look for first. I would rather find someone on my own though. It's important for me to be chemically/sexually attracted to someone.

There's the saying that let love find you or that it comes when you least expect it.

The good news is I did have a good date from match.com yesterday. I'm not going to jump to conclusions (you never know), but the guy presented himself well!

This, I believe, is true. In the meantime, with dating and being socially active, you can learn what to do and what not to do in relationships. This knowledge is useful in that you can reduce the strain on a relationship you want to grow.

All I know is being single and dating has felt better than being in the nightmarish long-term relationships I've been in.

I'm not desperate to find someone right away, but I would rather not keep meeting the same type of person over and over again (the sleazebag type). It looks like a lot of people have encountered this while dating, so I'm keeping my head up.

I just want to ask-Is it common to first run through a lot of scummy types when actively dating?

There was a guy from match.com that I thought was cute, was smart, and liked similar bands as I did. I have been talking with him for a few weeks.

Around the 3rd date, he started making sexual references and telling me about the gross sites that he has looked at (2 girls and one cup). Total turn-off. Then, he asked me if I heard of lemonparty....um, not my idea of 3rd date conversation. I usually change the topic when a guy starts saying that, and they get the hint.

While I admit I may have been too nosy, I found a gross site on his internet browser when checking MY e-mail, ha. But, I think that had to happen for a reason. Hey, he could have deleted his web history or not let me check my e-mail.

I'm not talking about regular porn. I'm talking about a really gross fetish site that I will not say.

Again, my friends said "Maybe he was just curious. Maybe his friend was looking at that site."

I'm not going to go with my friends though. Thinking about all of that sexually turned me off from him. I thought he was cute at first, but no thanks.

On the next, as wild child would say.

I did lots of online dating and actually all my boyfriends and my husband I met online, most specifically on dating sites. General rule if a guy asks for a picture in the first conversation tell him to get lost. If he asks about your body or for specific shots in the first week tell him to get lost. The ones that weren't just looking to have sex with as many women as possible are the ones that take forever to get around to asking for pictures or innuendo. Then they do it very cautiously. It was always amusing to see just how long it took for a guy to ask. On the other hand the ones that never ask either completely lack confidence or aren't interested and the conversation soon dies without ever meeting.

There are pictures of me splattered across dating sites and not a one has shown up anywhere else that I'm aware of. If I'm not aware of it then I don't care since it's unlikely anyone else I know is aware of it either and it's not like I put up suggestive photos or anything.

I came across about 1 person worth meeting every 6months on dating sites and had a new message about every other day. It works but yes you do have to wade through all the "scummy" types.

I only bumped up this thread to say that this same man has been prank calling me for the past few months and leaving me nasty messages. I didn't know who it was at first, until he left a message this morning saying "You're a and you didn't show me a picture of your butt and your body. Who the (edit) do you think you are, ? I'm going to find out what your last name is and where your family lives. I want to lick your (edit) even though you didn't show it to me" (he wanted to know my last name, and I didn't feel comfortable giving it to him right away).

I knew it was him from then. Wow...and this is the same guy who told me, "I'm the sweetest and funniest guy you will ever meet."

Call the police! That's harassment and threatening too. I may be over-cautious about situations like that, but you should save the message and start police documentation NOW. Do you have his full name, address, etc? See if there's an option for you to have the police warn him to stay away from you, WITHOUT you giving your full name or any information.
                      What a sicko ...
