If he mentions it to his mother, it means he is very serious IMHO. Wait until he is comfortable to break the news. That doesn't mean that you can't inquire if he talked to her yet every once in a while. He may not want to jinx the relationship.

Mentioning a relationship was not something I did until I was set to travel to get married. I didn't mention it to my father. I did tell my mother only days before flying. I mentioned it to only a few select friends at work and a few select friends outside of work. I didn't want to spend time explaining what went wrong if something derailed. I did not want any arguments against the marriage. I was marrying cross racial and cross cultural and it would take a long time to get my wife a visa, so a long separation after marriage was certain.

Just an update

I didn't really ask about me personally but we did have a good discussion about why he doesn't talk to his mom more about his life in general. He said he guesses it's because they've never been as close. I think he was much closer with his dad who passed away many years ago like my mom. He said she doesn't pry too much either, so that's probably a lot of it.

Made me feel better. It's not just me, it's just in general... I think he's much closer with his friends since he sees them more.
