Things I have Learned about Relationships as I have Gotten Older

I thought it might be interesting to share just some "tips" kind of regarding things you've learned as you've gotten older. I'd love to hear something maybe I haven't learned yet that might be good information. (I find the older I get, the less I need to learn lessons from my own experience )

So I'll start off (just a few things I've learned):

    * No matter how much you like someone, if you spend too much time with them, you will get on each other nerves at some point.

    * No one person will ever be able to fulfill every need and desire you have

    * You have to love people for who they are...not who you think they possibly could be with a little work.

    Ooh, great thread.

I'll have to think about this one for a bit.

These are very good realizations and I agree that these are all true. Thanks for sharing

Marry someone because of what they are, not what you wish they were.

Choose someone who is usually happy. If you love them, you will only be happy if they are.

Don't choose someone because of their appearance - physical beauty will fade. Choose someone you love, and they will always be beautiful to you.

And, one that seems obvious, but so many people miss: You can't love someone you don't like.

I've learned that communication is key to happy relationship.

Being open about what I want to sexually rather than just going along with what the guy wants.

I've learned sometimes u have to ask for respect as u define it. Its fifferent for everyone and your partner doesn't know what bothers you unless you say.

I've learned that not every argument can be settled and you sometimes do truly have to just agree to disagree.

I've learned what it feels like to be loved and cared for and treated well... And that now that I've experienced it (am experiencing it) I'd never go back to dating jerks and users.
Scars remind us of where we've been...they don't have to dictate where we're going.

.. Be with someone who makes you laugh and smile as much as possible.

.. Always look out for red flags, and never ignore them. Most of us have made mistakes regarding this when we're younger. Don't let love blind you.

.. Know how to divide your time between being together and being with friends. Being on top of each other all the time (figuratively speaking, of course ) will probably make it burn out fast.

.. (As I learned VERY recently) If there's a problem, always approach it calmly. Talk through it like adults and understand each other.

.. It's mostly like HD already said. I've said I loved people before, but never knew what that actually meant until I met my guy. I know what true love feels like and how to handle it, and NEVER let it go when you find it.

No boyfriend or girlfriend is as perfect as you think they are when you first start dating.

Patience is a virtue in relationships, but if you find yourself being more patient than you find yourself being happy- it might be time to evaluate just why you're in a relationship.

One's attractiveness will only get them so far. Even some of the most beautiful people in the world can't maintain a healthy romantic relationship. Regardless of the flawlessness on the outside, if the inside is a mess, they aren't worth your trouble.

Older people aren't necessarily any more mature. They can be just as giddy and silly when they fall in love and can also act just as stupidly and meanly as they did as teens. But in general as we get older our perspectives do mature and we can look at things a with little more balance and less drama.

Everyone wants to be loved, but some people don't know how to handle being loved and will actually make an effort to push that love away again.

I take that is somewhat connected to the fear of success. you work hard to be noticed, recognized, validated and loved. And then, when it's there...you bail out and run.
