Ever since January, I was obsessively trying to lose weight. Eating healthy, cutting calories to 1200-1500, exercising, etc... Nothing was budging until recently. My boyfriend says that stressing myself out was causing my body to hold onto the weight. My doctor said that maybe my body is happy with where it's at and that it's not necessary for me to lose weight.

It's hurtful when I'm trying to lose weight and my family/old roommate act as if I'm not doing anything.I wish they understood that weight loss isn't easy and that's it not healthy to lose so much weight overnight. When people pressure you and put you down, you get stressed and depressed. Stress and depression obviously hinders weight loss.

The reason why I doubt myself being offended at weight comments is because my entire family thinks there's nothing wrong with telling a girl that she needs to lose weight. Cousins side with my mom saying "She's doing it ouf care and and concern." If it's damaging a person's mental health, how's it caring and helping? Weight comments make me want to very damaging things (cutting, purging, limiting food). Some people think eating disorders are stupid, but I can see how people develop them when they come from such cold-hearted and dysfunctional families. You would think a family member would want to help their kid stop these destructive behaviors. How hard is it to just shut up about someone's weight? My mom has gotten to the point where weight is all what she talks about. Trust me, I've asked her to stop, but she doesn't listen. Her logic is "I gave birth to you. I can say whatever I want to you."

PB, I think you have to start limiting your time talking with your family. Let them know the reason. Then when your mother says whatever she wants, she knows what consequences it carries. You don't need her being negative to you all of the time. Was your diet less than 11 calories per pound of body weight?

What do you mean 11 calories per pound? I do limit my time, as I didn't visit my family for Christmas last year (which was a hard thing to explain), I only talk to mom once a week and she initiates the phone calls, etc. I have tried to ignore her phone calls, but she gets snarky and leaves nasty messages. There have been times where my mom unexpectedly announced she would drop in my city for one day (she lives in another state than I do), and I had to put up with it. I'm just venting in this thread, but I've set enough boundaries as of now.

Anyways, I'm working on not letting my mom's words affect me. There's no rule that says she's right.

Depending on the dieting information source and a persons activity level, if you are getting less than 11 calories per pound of body weight, you should be getting less calories than you need to maintain your weight. There are minor factors of age and height. Male or female also makes some difference. For a 100 pound person this would be 1100 calories per day.

Don't let your mom affect you too much.

            Panera,

First, if your Dr. says that your Body is happy with the weight. I would take that into serious consideration. If you yourself feel you may need to she a few pounds for YOU to feel in shape or better about yourself. Then ask your DR. or a Nutritionist what is the best way and still maintain a Healthy Diet.

There is actual weight and then the BMI to consider. They say Muscle actually weighs more that Fat (, which is a Myth) but if you take 5lbs of Fat and put it in a Bowl, it will look much bulkier, out of proportion and unattractive, but with 5 lbs of roast beef or bacon, all sliced and trimmed up. It is more attractive and pleasing to the eye.

A " Diet " whether to lose, gain or maintain a Healthy weight, consists of proper amounts of food, at proper intervals and with exercise to balance out the calories and burn any excess that may produce Extra Pounds or Inches.

A Diet to solely lose weight, Crash Diets, Fad diets may work temporarily, but rarely does it work for long term.

Find something that works or you. If you feel healthy and happy, then do what you are doing now. If not, try downsizing the amount ( intake ) of foods you know may have you gain unwanted weight. Drink Water. Lots of Water. water purifies the system. And exercise to balance the good energy from the nutrients you have put in your body.

On the Parents and Family commenting your need to loose weight . You can Ignore it, you can be hurt by it, or you can simply explain 1 time, you and your DR. are collaborating on the best for you.

Then , But this is Me.. Do not attempt if you cant do it without laughing !

I would try to Calculate their Height , Weight, BMI and the next time they commented Negatively.
I would proudly say " Wow ,Really ??? I lost 3 pounds and 2 inches this month "

Then look them Up and Down, focusing on their ( Blobbed Fat VS Sliced beef area) Slowly and just say " Now I know where it Went ". " Thanks so much for supporting me in my Healthy lifestyle"

I don't trust the BMI completely, as I know people that are in good shape that are considered "overweight" by BMI. My clothes have gotten loose, so I know I'm losing some weight. I need to buy a scale though. Is it best to weigh yourself in the morning or in the evening?

I just realized that living with my roommate created bad eating habits. She would eat unhealthy foods (pizza bagels, nachos, mac and cheese, ice cream) and invite me to eat with her. Isn't it weird how the same people that say you've gained a lot weight sabotage your weight loss efforts? I shouldn't have given in to her cajoling, but that's not a good influence to be around when you're trying to eat healthy. I'm in a better place now where I do eat healthy and there's no temptation.
