This guy friend also introduced me and wanted me to date my ex-boyfriend, who was very abusive. Even when this guy friend knew about the abuse, he once made a joke saying how some of the mean things my ex said were funny and how he should ask my ex about what I do that provokes guys to act like jerks towards me. He said he was joking, but that's a weird and insensitive thing to joke about.
I have tried to be nice to this man when I visit my parents' hometown, because he feels that we are good friends. But, I recently wrote him a letter expressing how I felt. I tried my best to polite, but direct. I said I have appreciated our friendship over the years, but would like my boundaries and feelings respected. I told him that I didn't like to be forced into doing something that I didn't want to do. That I want to take care of my health and body. I said that ever since the incident has happened, it makes me question just how healthy of a friend someone can be if they were to do. The friend never responded. I haven't heard from him in 9 months or so. If a friend confronted me on something I did to make them upset, I would at least respond or defend how I felt.
Don't friends watch out for your drinks and make sure that people don't spike it? Isn't spiking your drink against the law? If a 26 year old man (this isn't some 16 year old) is going to force me to drink against my will, what else is he going to do?
What I do know is that this friend came from a very controlling family where his mom was treated badly, and I wouldn't be surprised if he adapted the same tendencies.
Am I being immature or overly sensitive and let it go? Or do you really think I should trust my gut instinct on this one? Ever since I moved to the town where I live now, NOBODY has forced me to drink when I didn't want to. I feel like forced drinking is something that happens in highschool. People my age could care less if you're drinking or not. When I compare this particular friend to the people I know now, it just feels weird.
Maybe the friendship was meant to end. If I were to pretend that everything was okay, I would just keep remembering this man as someone that clearly disrespected my own boundaries and wishes. There's a saying "When people show you who they really are, believe them."
