I start university this fall, and I'm really excited. I've been accepted to the top school in the country and I'm going to continue my education to become a neurosurgeon [lets hope I last that long]. Needless to say, I've turned a new leaf this year. Last year I got mixed in the wrong crowd while going through a rough time family-wise, and that lead me to struggles with self harm (cutting), drinking, and anorexia. That span lasted for about seven months - I've been clean of everything for the last six months now! I'm not going to go back to my old 'fixes'.
That aside, I have some dark spots from last year I don't like to talk about. I've told one friend, whom I lost after admitting my struggles to. As I said, I'm starting university quite soon and I'm already close with my incoming class. I think in the past few weeks I've made more friends and met more unique people than my previous lifetime. Now that I'm coming into an environment that is more 'safe' than my last, I'm not sure how to approach the future with my past, if that makes any sense. I keep getting this image in my head of me a few years from now and in a relationship with the guy of my dreams. How or when do I tell him I used to be a cutter, if I should tell him at all? What do I say or do when he sees the scars on my legs? It might not seem like a big deal, but I'm an extremely secretive person (for an example, I broke my ribs and tailbone in an accident but didn't tell anyone because I'm stupid and didn't want to worry people) so it's really hard for me to even admit that seriously flawed time I let myself go through last year.
To sum it up, I'm not sure if my 'dark days' should be kept to myself for the rest of my life or not. Obviously, I'm not going to go running around campus giving out hugs and announcing I used to be a self-harmer. Again, what if I meet someone who deserves to know everything about me? Would I ruin the relationship if I told the truth? It's really frustrating when you don't know which people to tell and which to not. I would really appreciate opinions on the matter, and I like to thank you in advance for even just taking the time and reading this post. Strangely enough, it means a lot.
P.S I don't have any family, friends, or a trusted adult I can discuss this issue with.
