    Him or Him?

    I need some major advice!!

I recently graduated from college and transitioned in my career.

I dated my long time crush for 2 years in college and I honestly thought that the relationship would have made it to marriage. He was the best boyfriend I could have ever asked for! Towards the 2 year mark of our relationship (and my graduation), I noticed he got really comfortable and I would barely see him. What I mean by that is..he attended school, had a part-time job at a dept store and was a local club promoter so of course, worked late night at different clubs.

Although I understood his busy schedule, I kind of expected him to make time for me considering our history with one another. Like my mom always says, people seem to always find time for the things they WANT to do.

His definition of spending time became him coming to my house after work to spend the night and 75% of the time he would go directly to sleep.

I went the extra mile of suggesting that a relationship may not be what he needed at his prime, but he suggested otherwise. I had many concerns with him. He wasn't focused in school which prolonged him graduating and seemed to focus more on his club promoting. I tried to be very supportive and understanding, but the more I was understanding the more I was ran over. I became cold to our relationship.

Time passed and I was offered a job with a company in my career field. I gladly took the offer and had to go to another state to train for 2 weeks. My bf didn't seem interested that I was leaving and we rarely spoke my 2 weeks gone. At training, I met this guy and chemistry clicked almost immediately. It was crazy because I've never felt that way in my entire life. We all traveled to training for the 2 weeks and stayed in the company's apartments. It's ironic that our apartments were placed next to each other.

We would study for our training exams together and just talk for hours about anything. It was weird because people would often asked if we knew each other prior to arriving. The joke at the end of training was, we were most likely to be married. The chemistry was undeniable. However, I had a bf at the time and we lived in states too far to consider a relationship. I went back to my life and bf.

To my surprise, the 2 weeks away was a wake up call to my bf. He claimed that the time away really made him realize how much our relationship meant to him. He was back to the guy I'd known in the beginning, however I checked out mentally.

I had been treated so well by someone I'd only known for that short period of time at training. That in itself, allowed me to see that I deserved so much better. We broke up and the more time that passed, the more I thought about the guy from training. We began to talk over the phone and eventually discussed dating. I don't know if it had been heavy on his heart but he called one day and admitted to having a newborn. I honestly thought my Mr. Right was Mr. Wrong at that point. I couldn't believe that I was so naive. I fell so hard for someone who wasn't completely honest with me from day one as I was with him. I was so hurt.

But despite my pain, I continued to pursue a relationship going based on that amazing feeling I'd never had before. 8 months later. He has been great, BUT the distance is becoming to be an concern for me and he has constant issues with his child's mother which has led to child support and custody battles. RED FLAGS!

I want to continue a relationship with him but the reality of it all is, we won't be able to move to a mutual location any time soon because he wants to stay in the same city with his child which is understandable but I don't want to move to New York. Should I compromise?

I'm tired of having to compromise my wants to make others happy. I am young (25 yrs old, no kids, no major obligations) and want to experience much more. He wants to get married, but somehow no matter how much I try, a piece of me won't allow myself to give him 100%. Something won't let me and it appears in the form of my dreams. I dream of my ex, at least one a week. I can't let go of my "what ifs." I conjure up the courage to call my ex and see how he was doing maybe get some closure.

To my surprise, he's enrolled in school full-time and soon to graduate, he quit the club promoting job and found the Lord.

After we broke up, he explained that he went through a lot of downs and was forced to get his priorities together. He wanted to know if we could give "us" another chance. He also explained that he was thankful of my concerns which pushed him to get himself together.

I'm torn completely. I have a perfect guy who wants to commit, but has major baggage that I'm not sure I can accept then there's the lost guy who is trying to find himself but has made himself open to making "us" work. I have prayed and prayed for answers and stumbled across this website.

Please lend some helpful advice. I'm open for any feedback. Good or bad. Thanks

My advice to you is to end your relationship with both of them and just be "YOU" for a while. I realize that is a blunt statement, and I don't mean it flippantly. There are a lot of emotions invested with both of these men, I'm sure. However, neither of them seem to be in any position to give their all into a relationship. Your current boyfriend has so much on his plate, with his ex, custody battles, being a good father to his infant son. You've admitted you're not ready to really settle down, which is probably exactly what your boyfriend needs in a partner. He has a child and wants to build a life and a family. You're still young and want to live and explore. Your ex is in a transition in his life, he, too is probably not ready to devote himself to you - not with having to devote himself to his new found faith and his education.

You have a good career going, you've got no real obligations... go out, be young, explore this world with eyes wide open. If you think about it, for the last few years of your life, you've focused on the man in your life. It's time to shift that focus to YOU and developing who YOU are.

Both your SOs have been disappointments to you.

Your ex had lost interest in you and it took you leaving to give him the jump start he needed. In the back of your mind I'm sure you wonder if he has changed for good or if this is another phase. I think that that doubt and the fact that he didn't care enough about you at the right time will keep you from being happy with him.

The fact that your latest SO didn't come out about his child early in your relationship with him is a red flag, even beyond the fact that you would have to move to be with him. How could he compartmentalize so completely with someone he wanted a relationship with? It would seem that the emotion should have came out. There should have been sadness in his voice and eyes.

I think KM has good advice. Figure out what you want out of life, for you not others.
I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience.
      ...
Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot?

Wow! Isn't life funny. You want him, he doesn't want you. He wants you, you don't want him. Your story could be like a short movie. I'm thinking you took out a lot of time to word it well, because I got all wrapped up in it.

I love both of your guys. I understand not disclosing a baby to someone you've just met. It's not like you were in a relationship. It seems he came clean once the dating talk started, right?

I'm curious if the thought of being without one of these gentlemen for the rest of your life makes you ache inside? I broke up with a girlfriend partially because of feelings for another young lady and some other issues. After a couple of weeks it physically hurt me to be without her and I dreaded the thought of living life separated from her. I ran back to her, married her, and 12 years later my feelings for her are even stronger. It's crazy to me that I ever left her. If you have feelings like that, it's an easy choice. If you don't feel that kind of connection, then I don't know what to tell you. I don't believe it's necessary to have at the start as I believe one person can develop it for a lot of different people. It's just a nice guide when you have a decision like the one you have.

Thanks so much for the feedback! *KMonte and JNS, I totally agree with focusing on myself. I don't know if I am ready for such a commitment. And over time, I am doubting my present relationship with the guy I met at training. His "baggage" is beginning to affect our relationship. I'm so over love. *Stillness, Life is very crazy! You asked if I had an aching for either of the man and I would definitely say yes! I have an odd aching for my ex that would not go AWAY! I hate feeling this way for someone who treated me like that. Forgiveness is important, but taking that gamble again is the issue.

I don't know if the second person was not "honest" with you. You had a boyfriend at the time, you weren't dating and so it was his choice to tell you anything, nothing or everything about himself.

Having a new born though and going through custody battles, having issues with the Mother, can you tell me more? My thoughts though are this. You give your heart and soul when you have a child and you give everything a go.. Sure, people make mistakes and go into the wrong relationships but where a child is concerned? You try and try and try first. I am worried that this may not have happened but it may not have been his fault and I guess if you only have his word for what happened, it's hard to tell from this end.

Your ex.. Why didn't he call you in the 8 months? He made all these changes but was it for you or was it that he realised no woman would stay with him as you taught him

Again, you really need to tell us more in my opinion to ascertain if either are worth persuing.

The bottom line is we learn from our relationships, what we will and won't accept and that's the beauty.

I always believe people come into our lives for a reason. And, then, it's a reason, a season or a lifetime.

I think we know deep down inside if they are the right ones for us. And, I think not enough times we follow our gut feeling.

You seem to be highly intelligent in that department of knowing at least red flags and gut feelings.

I have to agree with KM, I think a few months on your own loving you, is going to find out who you are and what you really want.
