My heart hurts....

And I'm not sure what to do about it.

I've been with my guy for 6 months. There is a large age difference (11 years) and so there are some obvious learning curves, especially for him, but also for me in remembering that he has not yet experienced life to the same extent I have. But, this has been the best relationship I have had in terms of healthiness, feeling good about it, wanting him around, trusting him, etc. I sort of felt like he was my reward for all the heartache of dealing with my former boyfriends death. He is thoughtful, loving, affectionate, sensitive, always is where he says he is, does what he says he'll do, etc.

Except last night I was asking him to show me something on Snapchat and I noticed a girls name on there with a little smiley face beside her name (which in Snapchat world means she is someone he chats with often.). I recognized her as someone he had met a month prior. She had hired him and his friend out for a show (he's a musician) she was performing. That was the one and only time they met. So why, a month later were they still chatting with each other?

Clearly, I was completely devastated and he immediately began saying there was nothing to it and that he has zero interest in her whatsoever. He said he sent her the occasional music picture from one of his shows (he always takes pictures of the instruments) and that she'd occasionally send him something related to music. I don't know what to believe. I asked him if it would bother him if I had done something similar and he said yes, it would. I told him he needs to do some soul searching and figure out why he felt the need to share things with this girl that he met one time. I asked him to think about why she was even a factor and also why he never told me about it. He was devastated too, he cried his eyes out, but I cannot help but remind myself that if he hadn't been discovered, he'd still be chatting with her, in whatever capacity that was. He has told me over and over for 6 months that I am the only woman he wants to be with and that I don't ever have nothing to worry about. And I don't know why, but for some reason I believed him, and part of me still does. I just don't know why he did this.

We have a trip planned this weekend that we can't get the money back on.

I'm devastated, my heart hurts tremendously and I'm just not sure what to do. That, combined with 3 hours of sleep last night has me feeling at the bottom of the barrel.

Well, first, I think about the understanding between you two about what the relationship is. Had there been a discussion about seeing other people and where you both stand on new friendships with opposite sex?

I get the impression this is a professional contact for him. She has hired him, she may have potential leads for more business to come his way. So in that way, it doesn't seem too suspicious to me. I wouldn't blame him for keeping her around if there's potential for more work, or just the networking-not burning a bridge kinda thing.

Has he seen her in person again, since that one performance?

I think if you haven't already, it's a good time to get out into the open, the nature of the relationship, and set those boundaries and clear expectations.

I'm a little troubled by his response. If it was as innocent as he says, why would he be bothered if you did it?
And 2, why cry over nothing? If there was nothing to it, why be so defensive & emotional about it?

Maybe he was responding more to your reaction to finding out, I don't know, but his actions arent those of someone who'd just been "keeping in contact" with someone...

Had you had the discussion of exclusively dating? Was there an understanding in place?

We agreed very early on to be exclusive. He has never done anything but reassure me (I wasn't insecure, I didn't need the reassurance, but I did enjoy it of course) that I am the only person he wants.

I have told him that I have no issue with female friends if the relationship is transparent. There should be no hiding of it.

He and his band mate agreed after the first show with her that they wouldn't do it again. It was a 3 hour drive, yes they got paid well, but they felt like by doing those shows they were putting their focus on HER career instead of their own.

He says he has not seen her again. I believe that. I think what hurts me the most is that she was even in his head. Like when he sets up for a gig, he always sends me pics of his drums. Why did he feel the need to send that to her too? This person he met one time. He meets LOTS of people that he doesn't reach out to like that.....so why her? And why hide it and lie about it? Why not just post the pic on instagram or facebook (which she is also connected to him on)? Why do they send each other snapchats, but never comment or like each others posts on facebook or instagram? I asked all those questions last night, but he could not answer them.

I have one friend on snapchat I chat with really often. He is someone I've been friends with for years, is in his 50's and is married. He is the only person on my list with that "smiley face" beside his name, and that is because we chat so often that Snapchat labels us as close friends. She was the only person on my boyfriends extensive snapchat list who had that "smiley face" indicator beside her name.

It all makes me feel very sick and very betrayed. Even if the communication was innocent, the deceit was still present.

        I just read this.

His crying did start when I started crying. I never cry but it just hit me really hard. I felt angry and hurt. He's a super sensitive guy and has actually cried in front of me before. I think he knew he was wrong, he knew he had broken my trust and devastated me and when he saw me cry it made him feel even worse. He knows what I've been through and I think he legitimately doesn't want me to hurt, despite his actions.

I gave him the hypothetical: what if I met a guy during one of my work trips/conferences and you found out that a month after we were chatting with each other privately and sending pics back and forth (regardless of what the pics were, because with Snapchat there is no way to prove that.)? That was when he gave the response that he would not be happy with it. I was trying to spin it in a way that he could relate to how I was feeling and it seemed to work. He initially maintained that he had done nothing wrong and that his messages with her were completely innocent, but after I spun it in a way he could relate, he agreed that he would feel the same way.

He sent me a long message this morning that was apologetic and heartfelt. My response was not so much. I believed in him and he has hurt me. That isn't something I just wake up and get over.

Professional networking among musicians is common. It is a way to get gigs. It is also a way to chat with a music peer. Relationships between musicians seem to break apart after a while. The long term relationships are between a musician and a non-musician. Were any of his chats racy or flirty?

I can't judge this situation but I can understand your hurt and sense of betrayal. In your situation I would talk to him again and discuss the ins and outs of how your relationship works. What the boundaries are, etc. There does have to be a certain level of trust for a relationship to continue after such an event, but it IS possible. No one is perfect and he seems a decent enough guy. I suppose you have to decide where to go next. If you love each other deeply, you've every chance of re-gaining that trust. But you'll both have to work at it.

Yes. I've been really involved in the music industry for years because of my former boyfriend. Jealousy isn't my thing. Musicians will meet and be around lots of people. But the thing is, I know he's not trying to get gigs with her. His comments after the initial gig were that she wasn't very good. Her father is wealthy, she lives at home, doesn't work, and is able to get the occasional gig because of his influence but maybe 1-2 gigs a month. My bf's band usually plays anywhere from 2-4 gigs a week. His band does a lot of professional networking through their band social media pages, but not through their personal pages. I see no "innocent" reason why he would choose to maintain contact her.

Snapchat deletes chats after they are viewed so I have no way of knowing what they truly were sending each other.

He is a good guy. But he has really tarnished what we had worked to build the past six months. This has made me feel deceived, insecure, uncomfortable, etc. I wake up angry over this. After losing my boyfriend in 2014, I have gone through so much sadness and so much gut-wrenching heartache, anxiety, etc and this guy had really helped to turn that around for me. I have felt so much joy this past 6 months, and now I feel like it's gone.

He has apologized and poured his heart out. But I wonder, "are they just words?". I know that he can do nothing but apologize and tell me he'll never do this to me again, there's nothing else he can do. I have to decide if I can get past it without cheating myself of the joy and security I deserve in a relationship.

Could he be trying to get the"in" with her dad? That's the only thing I can think of.

So, I guess this may be your instincts telling you something. Personally I'd probably walk away. His rather dramatic response with crying and all, makes me think that he was mostly doing that for your benefit, so to speak. To make you believe he's truly sorry.
If he has no reasonable explanation, it's probably because the real reason wouldn't be satisfactory.

Hope that makes sense. ?. Still early for me, and meds haven't worn off

Thanks ats. I wasn't surprised by his dramatic response. He's a very emotional guy. A month or so ago he broke down and cried because he was feeling discouraged in his profession and like he hadn't made the progress he wanted to. I've never had a guy as emotional as this one. He has a very sweet and kind heart. The guy I was engaged to over 10 years ago cried now and then, but usually only in church. lol. But my current bf cries during sad movies even. It's a trait in him I have liked.

I try to remind myself that he is young (he's 22) and that he is just now learning many things I have learned over 10 years ago. But inexperience and naivety do not excuse lying. This wasn't a "do these pants make me look fat?" kind of a lie. Nothing excuses this kind of lie.

He has told me he did not and does not have any feelings for her whatsoever and never will. Part of me thinks I should chalk this up, if I am able, to a big mistake and give him another chance. The other part of me, the scared part, the part that has really let myself have feelings for this guy (not the norm for me), is scared that giving him another chance will equal heartbreak for me.

We leave tomorrow for a weekend trip we've both been super pumped about now for several months. I would've probably cancelled if I could've gotten our money back. It's certainly awkward embarking in to what should be an exciting weekend feeling the way that I do.

I really feel for you BD and the only thing I can say if chatting is the only thing your boy friend has done with this other women. By just sharing music and basic chit chat it sounds pretty innocent to me. I mean I have female friends that my wife knows of as wife with other guy friends. But we don't hide nothing from each other either. We discuss are conversation with each other. My only concern would be why was boy friend hiding these chit chat from you. That to me would be my red flag that other sex chats was going on with all this.I think a heart to heart long talk is needed for trust issue and if this relationship is going to ontinue. But again my heart go's to you during this time and that you can work through all this with your boy friend.
