After being locked out for 2 nights, she allowed me to come in to walk the dog. We talked for a while.

She is a little more settled down, but always sees things as "me vs them." Like "I feel like I lost because you didn't come see me yesterday (even though her emails were hostile and she broke her cellphone). I wanted to see you so much". I'm not a mind reader, when she says "I don't want to see your face" I tend to take it literally, especially when she's hitting/kicking me out the door.

She explained that in Japan, this kind of outburst (throwing dishes, punching/kicking) is normal for housewives. The husband should come back the next day, and pretend like nothing ever happened. "That's marriage" she says. Obviously, me and most of the rest of the world would disagree, but she probably genuinely believes this. Her parents aren't getting along and live separately most of the time, so perhaps that's what she sees as normal.

She also sees my refusal to tell her porn actress names as on par with her refusing to let me in the apartment and her physical violence. "You don't tell me, so when I don't let you inside it's the same thing." It's like I'm arguing with a child... and I don't know if therapy/counseling will help at all, even with a Japanese American counselor.

Yesterday night at 2 AM she called me and asked me to come home to talk. I went home with my father, because I feared she would become physically violent again and felt a 3rd presence would make her think twice before going ballistic. I was so wrong- she hates my parents (for being nearby, while hers are far away) and how I was "fleeing" to their house like a "coward". I guess it is childish for a 30 year old man to leave an argument and go to his parents house, but I didn't know what to do after the physical violence and object throwing in the apartment. She ended up waking the neighbors and hitting/kicking my father, so we left. The police arrived as we were leaving, and checked to see if anyone was hit. We said no, and they said that if anyone hits anyone in a domestic dispute, that person has to go to jail. I'm not sure if my wife got the point that THIS ISN'T NORMAL, but I spent the night at my parents again.

Right now, I only see a few possibilities-
    1. Continue for her to cool down, and try to get her to go to counseling with me in the US. Confront her about her outbursts, and get her to understand how normal adults work out arguments. And possibly move into the city, where she can walk around and socialize instead of being trapped in what she calls a podunk country town with nothing to do, even with a car. (Unfortunately, our lease still runs for 6 months).
    2. Convince her to return to Japan for a month or two, talk to her friends and family, and see what happens. Unfortunately, her mother will just passively support her, instead of admonishing her physical violence (since that's probably where it came from). I don't know if she will discuss her marriage problems with her friends. At this point, she keeps fluctuating between "you don't understand me, I want to go back to Japan" and "I miss you, I want to be with you."
    3. She stays in the US with no changes, and she kills herself (her own words)

I don't know if I'm being dense by still thinking that I want to make this work, either through counseling or a brief separation, or if it's 99% guaranteed she will keep reverting to her self-destructive behavior. But if the threat of jail won't even make her realize how she's overreacting, then I guess there's no option except to break it off (which would be horrible for the baby).

This women is completely out of control and insecure. And she's trying everything to control you, and to a large extent, it's working. She's not going to kill herself, that's just her trump card that she's throwing down. Who cares if her behavior is 'normal' in Japan?! She's not in Japan and we don't throw temper tantrums on a daily basis and physically assault people just because we're not secure with our bodies, get a grip lady!

My advice: send her back to Japan and begin divorce proceedings.

You're right, of course- it's not normal at all. And if there was no baby, it would be easier to say "try going back to Japan, and see if you feel better. But if this happens again, I'm not coming back home." But she's completely unpredictable and hysterical now... I mentioned we just bought a puppy, and if she returned to Japan, I would have to return him to the breeder because I can't care for it while I'm at work. He's helped my wife a lot, keeping her company, and she is begging begging begging me not to return him "when" she comes back from Japan to be with me again.

If she's being this selfish now with a dog, I don't even want to think about how she'll treat our baby. I don't see her staying in the US as an option anymore, even with counseling... she absolutely hates my parents now, thinking they are conspiring to steal her baby (I took the dog to my parents house, since she was in no condition to care for him and I thought she was adamant about returning to Japan anyway).

How could I have been so naive, thinking she just needed time to adapt to life in the US? On one hand, I was too lenient and defensive, altering my lifestyle (giving up hobbies, promising never to watch porn or masturbate(! though it wasn't a big problem)). On the other hand, I'm afraid if I went offensive and drew a line in the sand, she'd ignore it and the problem would escalate to suicide. I understood her point that watching women in pornography could mean that I like those kinds of bodies/faces/people more than her (it's not true, but I can see her point) but she uses it as a cudgel for all arguments, saying "this is always your fault, remember that." No matter how much I say that it's not a matter of fault, because it just hurts both of us...

Sorry, I'm more venting rather than responding... but every bit helps. Thanks for your replies.

I disagree that she wouldn't commit suicide because you never know. If she ever "attempts" suicide, know that you might be able to have her institutionalized (temporarily, based on state laws) and that she would be FORCED to get counseling in that case. This woman needs counseling and BADLY.
Having studied Japanese culture some, I can't imagine how outbursts and violence like this would be tolerated. Just because you were brought up American doesn't mean she can fool you about your parents' culture. According to Japanese culture, she should be respectful and even somewhat subservient to you.
She is controlling, manipulating, and downright ABUSING you. You don't have to put up with it. Document it. It will definitely help you in the case of custody. Please don't leave a child in this woman's hands.

What do you mean, document it? Tape record any argument we have? Save any abusive emails she sends me? Keep Skype chat logs?

Write down anything you can't easily and secretly record, making sure you write down the date. Things like arguments and physical violence. Definitely keep emails, texts, and any messenger logs. For phone calls/texts, see if you can get a printout from your cellphone provider, and PROTECT that data. If she'll read your emails, she'll certainly hack into your email (it's not hard at all) and delete things she doesn't want seen in court someday.

I'd keep everything in a notebook either at work or at your folks' place.

You can get a recorder online or from Radio Shack that will allow you to record phone conversations on either a cell or land line. Look it up online to find out the laws in your state. In mine it's legal as long as one party to the call (you) knows it's being recorded but your state maybe different. This woman needs help. Perhaps you should find a Japanese speaking counselor and tell her if she doesn't go you will have her arrested for domestic violence. SHe should also have a complete physical with full blood panels to see it there is a physical factor - if she has a serious chemical imbalance causing this it could affect the baby?

Suicide threats should be taken seriously, even if it's a manipulative tool, normal people don't do that. If you call the suicide hotline they will tell you to contact your insurance and get her to a shrink!

Incredibly sad story. I think what she needs is a break from here, some socializing back home and she'll be fine. I have had friends in the past who came from other countries and showed similar symptoms of depression. Please do not force her into anything.

Give her lot of love, take her back, stay with her in Japan for few months if you can, and let her socialize, let her invest in herself perhaps in things that make her feel good- like new clothes, new make-up. But most of all, show that you really love her. A woman is usually that insecure if she doesn't feel she's loved. I hope things get better with you and her!
