I think a man will change for the better if he, has come across a cross road of constant events that have made him "realise", or has a good woman next to him that has been different from the rest and love steps in, so he wants to change "habits" and work on understanding.

In general, I agree with OTYA, "willingness of a person to work on themselves"...

We need to realise that when we enter a relationship, then we "accept their good and their bad" and no one has a right to change those, it's up to the person to want to change, for themselves for most and perhaps for someone important in their life.

sometimes a man will change even when it is difficult and frightening for him. when he comes to certain realisations, ie that his behavior is detrimental, that he will lose a relationship etc. however you cant push this, the only behaviour you can control is yours.

As I would see it, I would call this "growing together". As relationships mature and consistency and stability is established, it's very easy to have past habits evolve into new habits. It's not work nor is it hard, it's a commitment to your partner and wanting the best for both of you.
