I had great luck with Nuvaring. It is not noticeable, pain free, once a month application. Your first time, it may even come with a little timer to keep in the bathroom to remind you to take it out. This is totally the way to go for people who forget (like me). I have an IUD now, two kids later, but I really liked the Nuvaring. Unfortunately I needed something a little more permanent or I would still be on it.Comment

[QUOTE=sgm042206;77916]however the doctors around here say it's too hard to get them in there right if your cervix has not been stretched from having a child. I'm so scared to do anything birth control-hormone related again, because I have hypothyroidismQUOTE]
Talk to Planned Parenthood rather than your Doc about this. They pretty much deal with nothing but BC and are usually up on the latest and greatest. D&Cs are done on women who never had children and that involves going through the cervix.Comment

I would have to agree that I think you're too young to make the decision of not wantings kids. Before my husband and I started dating, he considered getting a vasectomy when he was 20. We started dating when he was 22 and I was 19. We got married a few years later. After we were together for a while, he decided he wanted kids. He was lucky that no doctor would do a vasectomy on someone so young. We don't have any kids yet, but we plan on it in the next year hopefully
So just wait. Try the nuvaring, like some suggested. You might change your mind about wanting kids. If you do decide you absolutely positively cannot fathom the idea of having kids, however, a vasectomy is your best option. It's an easy procedure, really. My dad had one when I was a kid, and I didn't find out about it until I was a teenager. I never even knew he had surgery
He has said it wasn't nearly as bad as he expected.

You can get an IUD !
Don't listen to the bozos who tell you that you "have" to have a kid before inserting an IUD. The reason my wife and I heard was that the uterus was too small, nothing to do with the cervix. Both are bull.
IUDs are the most used contraceptive in the world, but for some reason they have a stigma in the US. I did extensive research, since my wife wanted an IUD and has never had a child (we're both 30). Turns out, most doctors just spout "conventional wisdom" which derives from a whopping two journal articles published in the early 1980s. These articles claim the failure and expulsion rate is higher for women that have never had children, like 50% greater.
I can't remember the exact percentages, but the expulsion rate for IUDs for women who had children was like 6 in 10,000 and for women with no children, 9 in 10,000. Either way, you're about 0.1% likely to expel it.
Not a big surprise, most doctors just toe the line and just enforce whatever they learned in med school, no matter how many years ago that was.
My wife's had the copper-T for over a year now and loves it. Her cramps were worse and bleeding heavier and 1-2 days longer for the first 2 months, and after that it's smooth sailing for 10 years

This is why I always suggest Planned Parenthood, they seem to a better grasp on this stuff. I think the hormoce laced IUDs are sold on the idea of having shorter periods but a lot of women seem to have trouble with them. Why not go for the chemical free? It just makes sense. KIF has a good point sometimes conventional wisdom is based on pretty flimsy stuff.Comment
