is it possible to use 2 kinds of contraceptive at once?

I feel like I'm asking a very stupid question, as I haven't seen any other threads on this topic.

Obviously, I know you can't use two hormonal contraceptives at once, but could you use a hormonal and another method, for example, the pill and copper IUD? Or implanon and IUD?
Apart from the cycle taking probably longer, would this cause any long or short term damage?

I'd be surprised if a Dr would actually do that... If you are that concerned, why not a barrier method. Pill/condom, pill/spermicide, etc.

Yeah, sounds pretty risky. Most BCs are 99.9% effective, give or take. So, if used properly, there's really no reason to double up. If you're really paranoid, like lana said, barrier method or spermicide.

For a month or two I was on the pill AND had an IUD, but for bleeding problems, not for the added protection. You CAN do it, but as the others have pointed out, there is really no need whatsoever.

you can use an IUD and the pill
but theres really no need to.

you're not increasing the protection that you're getting since both are about 99% effective.
and i see no point in putting unnecessary hormones into your body if you're already protected.
if you're very worried then using a condom is the way to go.
