This is really the only reason I signed up to this forum to share my experience with having the copper IUD fitted. I have a theory that most people only share experiences that are bad, because they feel angry or upset that it didn't go as planned etc, and I think this probably puts other women off getting them done as it sounds quite gruesome in some cases, and is a reason I put it off myself for so long.. but in all honesty, for me it was actually nothing! I want to help reasure other people out there that its not nessecarily gonna be the most horrific experience of your life This is my personal experience, and I'm not saying that other people's bad experiences were just them being over dramatic, a wimp or anything else that could be considered offensive etc, and I genuinely feel bad that it does cause some people more discomfort than others, I'm just simply trying to make other people more confident and relaxed about considering the coil/iud

I went with my boyfriend of 3 years to my local clinic. I had researched this contraception beforehand and decided it was probably the best option for me, as it has no hormones and pills didn't agree with me for this reason. I'll admit that I felt very anxious before going in to see the doctor, but it was all definately worth it.

I was told a little about the risks etc and generally everything I needed to know about it before getting it done, then was told to undress and lay on the bed with a 'modesty blanket' to reduce any embarrassment, which to be fair was at all uncomfortable at all, after all doctors are used to this thing, and is completely normal and natural.
The measuring of my womb etc was slightly uncomforable, but that was it, not really pain at all, and the insertion was very quick and painless, sort of felt just like verrrrryyyyy slight and very mild period pain which was the polar opposite of what I expected, due to reading these bad experiences on line XD


Again, I'm not trying to offend anyone here at all. If anyone reading this did have a bad experience then I am genuinely sorry and feel for you. I just hope I have made someone out there feel more condifent about going to get it, even if it is only one person

Also I forgot to add that you may want to take some paracetamol before hand, say an hour or so so its had chance to kick in just so it will will reduce any possible discomfort or pain afterwards. I also took a sugary drink with me to have afterwards as I am the type of person prone to fainting XD and also take a sanitary towel as it is possible to bleed a little bit afterwards I hope I have been of some help to someone

I apologise for the triple post! XD Finallllllly, I just want to add that I'm 18 and have never had any children, and despite being told I have a small womb, it was still a pretty painless insertion

I'm glad it was painless for you. I would have never thought of getting an IUD at 18(now 28 with one 7yr old), but good for you! Don't have to worry about any kids anytime soon! I got my IUD fitted back in November 2010 and it was quite painful. About 15-30 minutes of getting it fitted I felt like I was in labor all over again. I think they also said my uterus was on the smaller side at a 7 and that they preffered a 9. The measurement of the uterus was what was the most painful, I should have had it inserted on my period, but I was week before and didn't know to bring pain pills, they gave me Ipuprophen before they started.

I hope that everything goes well for you with the IUD and there are no problems. I've experienced longer times between my periods. First actual period on it was 45 days, second one was 50 days, but bleeding is around 5-7 days, it's the cramping that really gets to me. Endrometriosis runs in my family and the older i'm getting the more trouble i'm having down there. But despite that I felt it was best not to have the hormone, just let my body do its thing and yes i'm complaining out the **** about the cramps, 45 days and irregular bleeding. Not sure if this is something I want to use for the next 10 years, but for now, It's doing it's job.

Thanks for the positive copper iud post... I am currently not on birth control because I haven't found a viable option for myself. I do not want to take anything with hormones.. even the low dose ones or the localized hormones of a mirena. The thing that has me on the fence about the copper iud is the heavy periods some women experience as a side effect. I know it doesn't affect all women... but I am already have iron deficiancy anemia and since I'm vegetarian its hard to get in iron that absorbs as easily as it does for meat eaters. So the idea of heavy periods has put me off the only birth control i'm willing to consider at this point -- the copper iud. Be sure to update us as you go along

Thank you for posting your positive experience! I am definatley thinking of using the copperIUD!!! It was an obtion that my gyno suggested for me. I am 50, and have used a diaphram my whole life. I thought about other obtions because I've had bad yeast infections that have been resistant to treatments and I have an allergic itch now that remains a mystery. Still unsure and until I'm confident the yeast is gone, I will have to ask my gyno if the IUD could complicate my situation. good to know that it wasn't painful for you.

Hi I had the copper iud fitted 6 days ago after not long having my second child, my insertion was far from painless and was incredibly uncomfortable but I was assured that I would feel a little out of sort for a few days and then should return to normal. I was advised to expect mild period like pains, but 6 days in i am still experiencing sever cramps, lower abdominal and back pains to the point I'm even struggling to even pick up my baby. I have been in a terrible amount of pain and have experienced increasing blood loss, more so over the past 3 days similar to the amount lost after my births. Speaking to friends they have advised me that they experience this every month during their period and some times for up to 14 days at a time. I have been known to have a high pain tolerance and delivered both my children without pain relief but have been inhaling boxes of pain killers over the last few days and am now considering having the iud removed asap, has anyone else experienced these symptoms and if so does this pass or is it a continuous problem?

I registered just so i could thank you for posting this... I am having the copper IUD inserted today. After reading numerous sites & reviews (mostly bad) I have finally decided to go for it. I feel thie IUD is the best birth control for me. I was on almost everything out there & loved the patch but decided to go off it due to the high risks associated with it. I decided to get off birthcontrol altogether because of the hormones & was trying the withdrawal method but have had 2 pregnancy scares. I have to children already, Im 30yrs old, dont want anymore kids but I dont want my tubes tied in case i change my mind in the future. Im glad to read about your positive experience. You have helped me to finalize my decision.. Although I am getting it done today I have still been second guessing things....

I'm a big fan of the copper IUD, despite it not working for me. Insertion was uncomfortable but not overly painful, but it did end up giving me ridiculously heavy and painful periods as well as a yeast infection that I'm fighting on and off to this day.

However I feel that if the copper IUD happens to work for you, then it's a GREAT method of birth control. No hormones, no fuss, no worry... One of my friends has it and hasn't experienced ANY negative side effects. I definitely think it's worth a shot for everyone - it is SO easily removed if it doesn't work. I barely felt anything when they removed mine, it was just a simple tug of the strings.

Mes_T how could you get a yeast infection from that? Did you get them before you got the IUD? I am considering it, although I have had horrible bout of yeast. Still hoping I am rid of the yeast. I'm asking my doctor about it tomarrow.
