I'm 18, a virgin, and about to go off to college. Even though i'm a virgin, I know I will most-likely be sexually active in college. I have been thinking about getting on birth control to take precautions for when I go. Do you think this would be a good idea? Also, I know birth control side effects vary from person to person, but which one do all of you think would be the best way for me to go?

this is a very personnel choice. You need to research all the obtions and pick which one would be suited best for you. Condoms would be the easiest. Pills/hormones/ a huge consideration.

Why do you feel that college equals yay it's cool to have sex?

Meaning, it's not about age oh most definately you are vulnerable and going to be hit on bit time, belittled if you don't do it, but , but, remember the male hormones they are allllll going to try it on you....Choose wisely unless you don't care, just want experience, learning, fun...First time can, be important for most so if it is for you? WAIT and make them wait to make sure.

Now that the lecture is over Only honestly your Doctor can experiement as to what will work for you, we are all different, high/low dosage depends on the person.../.

Condoms I agree with viola in the meantime don't not do that, there are STDs and STI's as well to consider.........

No, I don't think it's "yay it's cool to have sex" but i do know I want to take precautions because I know how easy it is to get into those kind of situations. But yes you are right, I do want to wait until the right time...hence why i've waited so long already. So maybe it will be far away. I guess I should not have said "i'll probably be sexually-active" because I honestly do not know. I know I will be at some point my 4 years there though. I do want to do it, but I'd definitely need to be comfortable with the person. & thanks for the advice.

Thanks! yeah, it is a big consideration. I should probably just stick to condoms for now since I don't even know if i'll be sexually-active

My personal opinion, is that I would not even consider going on hormonal birth control without reason to.

For some women, the pill is great. No side effects, etc. For others (like me) the side effects were continuous. Let me tell you, all the sex I had was NEVER worth the side effects I went through in order to have it. That doesn't in any way mean you'll have the same experience, but if I were you, I'd get a pack of condoms and have them available just in case. You can also ask the guy to pull out in addition to wearing a condom. The fact of the matter is, too many girls get on the pill and then get in various relationships and don't use condoms at all. Condoms are a must, especially during your dating years. You might think you're going to be with the guy forever, every time you get in a relationship.........but you most likely won't, so keep yourself protected.

If you get into the situation and feel like you want to become sexually active with someone, make an appt with an OBGYN and have "the talk".

okay, thankyou very much for your opinion I think you are right. Last night I was reading up on most of the different forms out there, and I realized all the potential side-effects. For one, I do not want to gain weight, get bad acne, etc. I think condoms are the way for me to go. Getting pregnant scares me so much, so that is why I thought I would think about taking the extra precaution.

Also, another thing... I did not mention I am on accutane. I am currently near the end of my 3rd month on the drug and through the process I have signed to be Abstinent. If not, however, I would have had to be put on some form of birth control (i.e. the pill, etc) and ALSO a male condom. Accutane causes severe birth defects, so they DO NOT want you getting pregnant on it. So basically, I won't be done my accutane treatment until around the end of October 2011, and I will be in college for about 2 months by that point. So that's also why I was thinking of maybe getting on birth control before going off to school..so I dunno.

I am a college student and I agree with CW. You will be hit on ALL the time. It will be hard to resist, especially if you like to date. I was bored living with my Aunt so I dated a lot. Most of the guys are interested in only one thing when they date. Once they get it, they move on to the next conquest. I gave in to a guy once just because he had taken me out 9 times and spent a fortune on me for dinners and entertainment; I thought I owed him. Believe me I did not enjoy it, I couldn't wait for it to get over with. I only gave in 3 times in over a year, that was way below average and I was still considered "hard to get". Once a girl "gives in" it seems like every guy on campus knows it the next day.

My advice is, if you are a virgin, stay that way until you meet a guy that is willing to make a long term commitment. This is very unlikely to happen with guys you meet in college. If you do date college guys, keep some condoms in your purse especially if you like to drink alcohol.

Thankyou for the advice! & yeah, I wouldn't want to be considered ****ty. I do like to drink though, and that is pretty much why I was thinking about getting on the birth control in the first place, like in case I got into one of those situations. I've been pressured to do it before and I know it really does not feel nice (being pressured) and it makes you realize how important it is that you do it with someone you actually care about. I'm just afraid that if I am drinking, i'll lose that mentality. I'll just have to make sure I know my drinking limits.

It sucks that i'm going off because just recently I met a guy and we both like/liked eachother alot...but neither of us wants to do the distance thing...so we are trying not to talk because we don't want to like eachother even more. lol. Perfect timing right? It really sucks... but whatever I guess. I guess there's a reason.
