Merena IUD Experiences (Good or Bad)

I'm 30 yrs old and have had Merena as my sole form of birth control since Oct 2008. I'm scheduled for a pelvic ultrasound tomorrow to "locate" the IUD/string. Last week, I went to my GYN to get it removed but she couldn't find the string to pull it out.

I've gained about 50 lbs. since then and have not been able to lose it, slowly and consistently gaining. Personally, I feel it's contributed to my weight gain and lack of sex drive. I can't wait to get it out but am so nervous at the same time because when the doc was "looking" for it, it hurt like a *****!

Just curious about others experiences? Good or bad.

It has been good at preventing pregnancy though. No complaints there.

Hello Joeliza, When I had my Mirena fitted I was told by the nurse that it would increase my appetite and I would put on weight, that's all I needed being morbidly overweight.

I had an ultrasound and internal scan done and my Mirena coil couldn't be seen so then I had an xray done and it showed up on that. I don't think it's in my uterus anymore, I think it is floating around my body. I'm having an op soon to have my womb scrapped and I'm supposed to be having the old Mirena taken out and a new one put in, well I'm going to tell the surgeon I don't want another one put in as I've started my menopause now. I will have to have the coil surgically removed and that will be a nightmare in itself.

You can always have yours taken out in hospital with a local anaesthetic.

        Good luck anyway.

          Thanks for your responses.

Went to the dr yesterday and the woman doing the ultrasound (from inside and on top of tummy) said she believes she saw the iud but wasn't convinced that it was where it should be... They need to forward the results and will likely be contacting me about scheduling a 3D ultrasound next to see it more clearly.

          This is rediculous!! Grrrrr...

I wish someone would have told me that, or that I had done my research.

Trouble is everyone is different and different things affect people in different ways, other people might say different.

I'm sure they will find it one way or another. That's good about a 3D ultrasound, I've never heard of that. I wonder why I couldn't have had one of those.

Just to say I have had my Mirena coil out now and a new one was put in. They had no trouble finding it so it wasn't as bad as I thought as it was still in the uterus.
