    Copper iud - late period

    Hi all,

I am new here and just seeking some advice

June 14th I had a copper IUD fitted, i experienced some cramping and spotting bleeding, nothing major, a week ago i went to the dr to check it was still in place as I could not feel the strings, they confirmed all was ok...

last weekend i had unprotected sex, yes silly I know but I am fearing the worst he did his business inside of me, and although the IUD is 99% effective I am worrying. My period is due NOW and so far I have only has some spotting and a few cramps but nothing like it usually is, i am always regular as clockwork so for it to be not on time is a worry.

I did a preg test a couple of nights ago with nneg results but it may be to early to tell i will do one this coming Sunday as that will be 7 days since unprotected sex

i read on another forum some women using the IUD had no periods with the copper one, and some people remain to have a heavy flow

Just need some guidance please so i stop freaking out!!

Okay first off you have taken appropriate measures in terms of pregnancy protection, and honestly you have nothing to worry about. What is the point of getting this expensive device fitted, which is as effective as taking the pill (or more so), if you are just going to keep worrying? Might as well save your money and not have sex.

Your body has gone through a pretty big change a mere 2 weeks ago. Many contraceptives cause delayed or changed periods, especially for the first few months when our bodies are adjusting.

Wait another couple of weeks and if your period still hasn't come then take another pregnancy test for your peace of mind. However I do not believe you are at risk.

I think the only thing you have to worry about from now until you get the IUD removed down the road is STDs. Okay?

      hey there, thank you.

I read on yahoo awnsers people going OMG you must be pregnant if no period do a test asap!! etc and I am thinking but hold on if its 99% effective, why would all these women suddenly be pregnant from not having a period.... i heard the iud affects the lining of the womb so we might get period pains etc but nothing acctually comes out?

dont get me wrong I am thrilled I am not bleeding to death like most people described it but obviously if you miss a period your initial reaction is ....pregnant. Plus I heard about an eptopic pregnancy, and some of the symptoms I had, slight spotting bleeding, pain when urinating etc but thats now gone i took a tablet for it.

I am over thinking things but if I am preparing myself for the worst just incase. I will be so upset if this has not worked, but obviously as of now, condoms are a must, I cant go through this worry again

        Update, 30th June 12.

I have done 2 tests today one a boots own brand, came back neg and a clear blue digital... neg. I know its been only 6 days since sex but I was just worried, I am going to do one next Sunday because that will be 14 days (2 weeks) since sex and I beleive that will give me the best accurate result.

Question though - if i called the doctors and said i have done 2 tests both neg but I want to be 100% sure can they do a blood test on me? or is it to early.....

It depends on by how many days you've missed your period... I can't remember if it's one week, or something like that? But anyway if you really want to go to the docs then yes they can do a blood test, why not give them a call now. Chances are, by the time you get the appointment it will be soon enough to tell anyway.
