    Birth control and ovulation pain

Before I started birth control pills I always experienced ovulation symptoms, (increased vaginal discharge, one of my ovaries slightly hurting, and hornier than usual) I usually got these symptoms in the middle of my menstrual cycle. I've been on birth control for close to a year now, but almost every month I still get these symptoms. I've been on two different types of pills. Are these symptoms in my head, am I ovulating, or is there something else wrong?

Nope, not in your head. I still sometimes (not always) get an ovary in a vice grip pain (probably because my ovaries are cystic) and whether I'm on b/c or not it didn't really change much, except for when I was on Depo, I LOVED depo because before I got pregnant I got all the good side effect and only a little bit of weight gain, not everyone is as lucky though and after I had my daughter and went back on Depo it wasn't the same any more You might try a few more pills and see if something else helps but most likely you'll just end up having to deal with it. Since a lot of the hormonal b/c can decrease your libido though, you might want to stick with what you've got...

Thanks for the info, but because i still ovulate is there more of a possibility for me to get pregnant or does the birth control still stop that somehow?

No, even the mini-pill where you still ovulate thickens/changes the mucus in the lining of the uterus so that you don't become pregnant. No b/c is 100% effective short of actual sterilizations, my niece got pregnant both the pill and depo (she got a tubal after her second was born, lol). It's likely that you're not actually ovulating, I wasn't actually ovulating but dang if my ovaries weren't doing SOMETHING wicked.

Had you looked into the norplant birth control system my one daughter has that done.

What type of pill are you on? As sort of noted above, the mini-pill doesn't mainly stop ovulation so you would still likely get ovulation pain on the minipill.

Even the regular/combined pill doesn't always stop ovulation, but it still works to prevent pregnancy in other ways even if you ovulate. I'm on the combined pill and I still get ovulation pain maybe a couple of times a year, but even during these months I haven't had a pregnancy scare in the three-plus years I've been having sex.

Hey Motorguy, has your daughter had any problem with weight gain? The only other person that I know that got Norplant gained 40 lbs in 6 weeks. She was so ****ed as it had taken her a year to lose 50 lbs, poor girl.

Well that's good, Depo made me gain weight but it was slow, like maybe 5lbs a year, and since I was only 88 lbs at 24 it was a good thing
