    Birth Control Question!

    Hello everyone,
I recently got prescribed birth control and the nurse suggested that I start my pill when I start my period (because I knew it was coming soon) but I started it a couple of days after she prescribed it to me (I didnt start my period). I've been taking it regularly for a couple of days now. I was wondering, what happens to the egg if it was already released before you go on birth control? Would it only go away after I get my next period? Or what?
I'm kind of scared I messed up because I've asked this question on yahoo and they basically all said I'm wasting a pack of pills. I don't know if I should just stop using it and start again after my period starts.. ?
Would I have a higher chance of getting pregnant if I were to have unprotected sex (not now, but like later on hypothetically).

Hey Ruth you can go to Web M.D and ask these same question you get more in details answer on your birth pills. I know it took two of my daughters a few days for there bodies to adjust to the birth control pills so you may be going through these same adjustment. Every women bodies and system will react differently to birth control pills good luck Ruth,

Birth control pills are not considered at their full effectiveness until 3 months. The number is still plenty high enough pretty much any doctor will tell you that you don't need another method of birth control after the first month at minimum. Usually they just say to use a backup method for a week even if you don't start it on your period. Different pills have different suggestions though. You might try reading the info packet that comes with every prescription med to see if it covers not starting on your period. Many will have instructions for a "sunday" start since it's easy for people to remember where they are in the pack and to start the new pack on time by specifying a day like the start of the week rather than a specific time in their last period. Technically a sunday start could be any day of the week that's convenient for you.

It's not entirely a waste to start them now because they will start adjusting your body to the pills but unless I got told differently by a medical professional I would use a backup method until you get your period or start a 2nd pack. If you want a for sure answer call up or stop by your pharmacy. They often know different types and brands of meds even better than doctors and definitely better than the internet.

The usual times to start are a) on the day your period starts because this messes with your natural schedule as little as possible, or b) the Sunday after your period starts so a 21 or 28 day pack will be synched up with the weeks on the calendar. I think you can start any time, but it will make the timing of your first few cycles weirder and not take effect as fast.
