Please help! I took Next Choice 48 hours after having unprotected sex. Will it work?

My last period started on April 1. According to my period tracker app, my next period is scheduled to start April 29. My period is always on time. On April 14, I had protected sex. On April 18 around 10pm, I had unprotected sex for a few minutes before we used a condom. On April 19, we did the same thing also around 10pm. That night he couldn't "finish." The next day at 7pm, I took Next Choice One Dose. I have not had any side effects. This is my first time taking emergency contraception. I have read good reviews for Next Choice and that it can delay your period. I am just worried it will not work. Will it work?

Since your partner did not ejaculate inside of you without protection, you had a very low chance of pregnancy to begin with. Using an emergency contraceptive in this situation should definitely work, but will probably delay your period or interrupt your cycles.

Regardless of the appearance of your period, you should be able to use a home pregnancy test around 3 weeks after the last unprotected sexual contact to be sure you're safe.

Thank you so much. That makes me feel a lot better! And I should probably wait to have sex again until after I gotten my period just to be safe, right?

If you are properly using a condom there's no reason to wait and even if you wait you should use a condom after your period. Unless you've been on birth control pills or equivalent for more than a month and are having regular periods with it then it's best to always use condoms.

Okay. Thank you! I am not on birth control and have regular periods. Also, I am not sure if I should take birth control or not because sometimes I go several weeks without having sex and sometimes I have sex a lot over the course of several weeks. Is it worth it to go on birth control? So far, condoms alone have been very reliable and I trust them.

If you're an experienced condom user and using them according to directions, they are just about as effective as hormonal BC (with much less in the way of side effects.) If they are working for you, keep using them

I've always been just a condom girl, and I strongly suspect that the lack of alternative BC methods is what's kept my libido running at full speed all these years.

jen1447, I am kind of new to all of this stuff and am nervous to try birth control, especially since there are so many side effects. I know it is best to be extra safe and take BC in addition to condoms, but so far I'm just a condom girl too.

Condoms are the only form of birth control I use. I am too nervous to try birth control pills. Thanks for the advice. I feel a lot better now!

Just be very strict about their use hon - no exceptions. Seriously, insist on one every time, and get that thing on before any of the action starts. If there aren't any available for whatever dumb reason, nothing resembling a penis goes up into or anywhere near your girl. Fingers and tongues (and yes, penis-shaped toys) okay, but nothing that might have man goo come out of it.
