Hey everyone- I just got a copper IUD inserted this afternoon, and it was pretty uncomfortable having it inserted, but so far it has been fine. I spent the past 5 hours walking around our local Fair and I was fine. I am just now feeling some mild cramping- but nothing bad.

As of now- I would totally recommend the paraguard to anyone

Country Girl- I am in the same boat as you, and only a few hours in myself. I am liking it so far....

I am debating on switching Birth Control methods. I'm not much of a fan of my pap tests so getting this inserted might be a bit difficult for me. It's good it doesn't give out a ton of hormones like the pill I am on currently since I am trying to lose the weight and it's cool I don't have to deal with taking something everyday.

It's an idea floating around in my head right now. Never had kids and at only 20 years old with no job, kids are out of the question currently.

Ive had the copper IUD for a little under three months. I got the IUD put in the same time I aborted. The whole experience was painful for me, but again it lasted a few minutes. I had bad cramping and really heavy bleeding, but thought it was because of the abortion. The pain in my abdominal continued and gets worse when im about to have my period. Before the IUD, I had really light periods that were extremely short and barely had cramping. After I had the IUD inserted, I cramp everyday, sometimes it's unbearable. I usually have bloody discharge (and have increased the amount of discharge i have), light bleeding a week before my period. Then i have a really heavy period for 7-9days with intensive cramping, i have light days for over a week to two weeks. Needless to say, im always bleeding which affects the sex with my partner, which we are extremely sexually active. My partner says he cant feel the IUD, but there are certain positions that I can feel a discomfort and need to stop. Which sucks! Physically i feel really weak, I think it is because of the fact I am always bleeding. I eat right and work out everyday. I was convinced i was going to take the IUD out and switch to the mirena IUD but after researching the mirena. Ive concluded to try out the copper IUD for a little bit longer, go to my doctor for the pain, and hope that my period regulates. Cons about the mirena, is the possibility of having blood clots, not have as much energy, have less of a sex drive, have intense cramping, weight gain, and all the risks hormones gives you--the good thing with the mirena is the fact that your period might stop.

Has anyone experienced bleeding for as long as i have? Sex isn't what it used to be because im bleeding all the time. Condoms wont work for us, and i refuse to have a birth control method with hormones. I was looking into the diaphragm or using the sponge as a birth control method, but then there is lubricant that would be needed since you can be dry and reviews say it gets messy with the sponge. Ill be honest, usually when my partner and me have sex we don't have time (or will power) to bring out condoms, or lubricant or to insert the diaphragm. Any recommendations?

I got my IUD inserted yesterday, and it definitely wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I did feel cramps for about 30 seconds and then the rest was fine. Later on, i did feel a bit of cramping, but nothing worse than menstrual cramps. Today I'm at work and i feel absolutely fine!

Totally fine experience with IUD insertion

Hi all, I know the original post is old, but for anyone like me who comes across this thread, I thought I'd share my experience.

I found the post yesterday as I was searching for info about IUD insertion in a panic. My IUD was scheduled to be inserted later that day. Needless to say, the posts did NOT make me any less afraid. Well, as it turns out, the whole experience was NOT THAT BAD!!! A bit of discomfort when they insert the speculum, but after that it was seriously no big deal. They numb the cervix with lidocaine so you don't feel a thing. I took 800 mg of ibuprofen 1 hour before the procedure (on doctor's orders) and I'm sure that helped. Afterward, I had some mild cramping, like a light period, and a bit of light bleeding. The next day, no pain and only very light spotting. I expect the bleeding will be totally gone by the weekend.

So ladies--don't be afraid! Of course you are going to hear worst-case scenarios on the web, but seriously, the IUD insertion was a piece of cake!

Labor, on the other hand...now there's a horror story for you.

I just had the paraguard IUD inserted yesterday and it was very frightening because I fainted for the first time in my life. I was fine for the procedure...it was painful and I felt a little lightheaded and nauseous afterwards. Then I was driving home and felt very lightheaded and pulled over. Luckily my mom came with me and she began driving. I then started to feel really lightheaded and everything started to go black. My mom said that all of a sudden my body went limp and my eyes were open! I woke up about a minute later and felt very frightened and lightheaded still. VERY SCARY! As far as pain goes, I got it inserted with my period, so it kind of just feels like period cramps so far. I'm a bit nervous after reading all of these posts that something terrible will happen. I am only 22 and I definitely want to have children one day and will hate myself if this IUD somehow prevents that from happening!

I have had a copper IUD for about six months and couldn't be happier. After years of having my sex drive stifled from birth control it was a welcome change, for both me and my partner. I would highly recommend this for anyone wanting to try something natural.

It did hurt going in, very, very uncomfortable but only for about 5 minutes. I also had it done at a womens clinic so they had some one to hold my hand. I had cramps all day and sporadically for about a month, nothing major, and nothing a couple advil couldn't fix at the worst of times. Now I seem to be back to normal, slightly heavier periods, but no longer, still five days. Oh and I am a 25 yr old who's never been pregnant, and never had an abortion.

Also from what I've read a lot of people seem to comment that they get acne, and really bad cramps with an IUD. I think a lot of people switch directly from the pill to IUD and because the hormones in the pill clear your skin and make for lighter periods that might be a reason for the drastic change in the balance of your body. I stopped taking the pill 3 months before I got my IUD (long distance relationship) and noticed immediately a few more pimples and a longer period (but also a higher sex drive)
                  Anyway hope this helps.

Just got one! This is a good one =)

Hello all I am 24 years old, married, no children, abortion 7 years ago.
I started using birth control when I got married 5 years ago and began with the Nuva Ring, which worked, it was just weird. Went from Nuva Ring to Yaz, which worked, but it turned me into a crazy psycho at times. Then I switched to Loestrin 24 FE, which was great for a couple years, then my emotions got too much to bare. Before I decided to quit the pill altogether I started looking into IUD's. I thought you had to have given birth in order to get one when I first heard about it. I told my GYN I was done taking the pill and done with hormones then she recommended Paraguard. I was very excited to hear how I was eligible and how soon I would be able to get it inserted. I had just stopped taking the pill almost a week before I saw her and I got the Paraguard inserted a week later. This forum definitely helped in making my final decision for sure. It was a little scary at first because of all the negative and gory posts at the start, but as you read there was hope!
What helped me was going in with a positive attitude. I was prescribed misoprostol which I had to instert one the night before (vaginally as if inserting a tampon) and one the morning of the procedure. I read about the medication's side effects before doing this so I knew what to expect. The only effect I got was a little nausea and dizziness. I made sure I had a ride, which my husband was more than happy to do. I had some powerade zero and a light breakfast, so I was well hydrated and well fed. I made sure I went to the bathroom for both 1 and 2. I read in earlier posts that some had to run to the bathroom right after the procedure because they had diarrhea immediately. Well, when I went to the bathroom before seeing the doctor I noticed I had quite a lot of poop in me, and it could have to do with the medication they prescribed. When the nurse brought me in and went over everything I remembered to ask that the ultrasound will be done right after the IUD is put in. When I asked this she realized she had me in the wrong room, which made me very glad I brought it. So, I'm in the room with the ultrasound machine and ready to get started. I watched a display of how the IUD was inserted so I knew what to expect when she got started. Before the procedure I took two ibuprofin because you know you are going to get some cramps. I was as calm as could be when she got started. The beginning felt like getting a papsmear. I definitely felt some pressure, but knew I had to remain calm and loose, because you know this would not go well if you tense up. She let me know when she was inserting it, which I agree with the others the best word to describe it is intense, but only for about 60 seconds, in and out. Then everything is still open because the strings need to be trimmed and then your done! The ultrasound showed it was exactly where it had to be. Once she was all done I laid there for a moment, got up, put a pad on and left the office with my husband. It wasn't very comfortable to sit directly after, but that is normal. I felt just fine for the rest of the day. Decided to stay home and be mellow. You don't want much activity after any procedure. I felt a little cramping, took two more ibuprofin and was fine. I have not experienced anything awful at all. I feel great. Sex is great. Here I am a week later excited to post something that I hope will help someone like me. So I hope this helps! I highly recommend Paraguard!

                      A little nervous

I'm having the copper IUD inserted on Friday and I'm a little nervous. I'm so grateful for this site, because there are so many positive reviews instead of horror stories! I'm 30 years old, no children, no abortions, and I'm just plain sick of the birth control pill. I've been on it for nearly a decade, and even though I haven't actually had any negative side effects from the pill, I'm just realizing that I don't want to keep putting that junk in my body. So I figured the copper IUD would be the best option. I'm having the IUD inserted on, what is usually, the heaviest day of my period because the gyno said that's when your cervix is the softest. I'm also going to take ibuprofen before the procedure and my boyfriend is driving me to and from the appointment, as a procaution. I feel really confident that my gyno will make it as quick and painless as possible, but I'm still worried about the horrible cramps and heavy, heavy bleeding that some women have. I'll post an update after I have it done to let you all know how it went for me Wish me luck!
