I have been in a serious relationship with my boyfriend for almost a year now. We have talked about having kids and both decided that we should wait about 5 years before trying. I would like to get on Birth Control, but I'm pretty nervous about it. After reading many articles about the different types of BC, all I am seeing is tons of side effects and what could happen if taking it for a long period of time.
I'm not really sure if this is true, because I haven't seen much about it. But I have heard that some women will take birth control for a few years, then when they are ready to have a child, they can't because the BC messed them up.
I would really like to take something just so we don't have an accidental pregnancy. Does anyone have any suggestions?

hey amanda i am kind of in the same situation here, i have been on birth control for a little over a year and my pharmacy switched me to a generic. I am over weight and now i am having problems with it, so talk to your gyn and plan out what would be right for you. do your research and look at the side effects and everything once more look at your family history too to see what you are at a higher risk for, if breast cancer runs in your family talk to the gyn and see what would be good for you because sadly there are not many options for that situation.

I agree with withered_rose about talking to your gyno . I have also done some reading into birthcontrol , as to the pregnancy thing , birthcontrol can take some time to completely leave the system ( up to a year for some types ) which makes concieving difficult . The reading says , however , that this isnt a permant thing , just temporary . I cant say I know for sure , as I am not to the point that I want children . But from what I understand , its just if you are on birthcontrol for a long time , or any medicine , its worked into your system ... it just has to clear out . But seriously , just ask your gyno about it all. Research your options , and decide whats best for you ( if you go to a local clinic or health dept , they may push you toward a certain type ... if its not right for you , tell them what you want . ) Also , dont forget that you can ask questions ... your doctor has heard them all before , so make a list before you go , that way you remember. I did that .

Thanks to the both of you. I didn't know that it could take up to a year to leave the system. I will definitely have to make a list because I have horrible memory lol.
