Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum, nice to meet ye all!

I'm scheduled for a pelvic ultrasound next week. I have most of the symptoms of PCOS so I'm pretty sure I have it. Im 23 years old.

I'm very nervous about the ultrasound though. I dont know what to expect, does anyone have any experience of this? Is it internal and/or external?

What might/will they find if I have PCOS?
Will it matter that I'm a virgin?
What happens post diagnosis?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just very nervous about it. Any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

This will more than likely be an internal ultrasound, to allow them to get better images. Some of my friends described their pelvic ultrasounds as very uncomfortable experiences, and the doctor who performed my pelvic ultrasound did tell me, in an apologetic manner, that it might be a bit uncomfortable. However, he had started the examination with a manual exam (I was experiencing both a hemmorhagic cyst and a miscarriage at the time of my pelvic ultrasound), and I can say that after the pain I experienced during that manual exam (from my regular gynecologist, who I can assure you is always quite gentle), the pelvic ultrasound didn't hurt in the slightest. I think it helps that I was able to relax a bit in trusting that my doctor would be as gentle as possible, and knowing that any pain or discomfort I might experience would be the least amount possible, because he is very good in that regard. I have been to some real "horse doctors" in the past, who didn't seem to take the delicacy of what they were working with into regard (including the only female gynecologist I ever saw, who was by far the most aggressive). So hopefully, your gynecologist is someone you can trust and feel comfortable with and will be the one actually performing the procedure, to allow you to relax a bit. I also think that like the speculum, there are differing sizes of the tool that they use for the internal ultrasounds (someone else on here may be able to say for certain), so you might ask the doctor performing the procedure about that, if by looking at it you are afraid that it is too large. Be sure that you let them know that you are a virgin, as it will make some difference in your comfort level, and they should take that into consideration in making you as comfortable as possible. But think positive thoughts - the people performing these procedures are professionals who have done this many times for women who already have pain and discomfort in the region, and they should be experienced in considering the woman's comfort. After all, the only way for them to get clear, consistent images is to ensure that the woman is comfortable enough to lie still through the procedure. I'm sorry to ramble, and I hope that my message has helped to give you a little better idea of what to expect, rather than worrying you.

I have PCOS as well, since I was 12. 1 out of every 10 women have this. Some studies shows that 5-10% women have this. If you are a virgin, just get the ultrasound. Not the transvaginal examination since your hymen is still in tact
