Vaginal Burning and no meds have worked

    Hello everyone,
I'm hoping to make an appointment with my doctor tomorrow but I'm very concerned and have decided to post a thread on here. Last year I had the same symptoms I have now and oral metronidazole caplets were prescribed and appeared to work. When I went back to my doctor she reported that I had an overgrowth of the natural flora of the vagina.

8 days ago I developed the same symptom, a constant dull burning sensation that is at times unbearable. There were no other symptoms but after doing some research online I decided to try an oral tablet for a yeast infection. That did absolutely nothing.

By Friday I was desperate and asked a doctor at a walk in clinic for the same prescription my regular doctor gave me last year. I've notice a slight improvement since taking the medication 4 days ago but the burning sensation returns at least once a day (usually in the evening) and lasts a few hours. It then recedes and everything feels normal again other than the extreme tenderness, swelling and redness.

I don't remember the infection taking so long to go away last year. Has anyone else experienced something like this? Thanks for any info.

I hope your doctors appointment has given you a better idea of what's going on? I was going to suggest a full set of STI swabs and another flora one to see what's going on.

      UPDATE
So I went to see my doctor this morning and she seems to think that the burning is due to irritation from either laundry detergent or panty liners (I've switched both in the last month). I don't know if I agree but I did take the doctor's advice and rewashed all my underwear using the brand of detergent that I used to use and I'm not using the panty liners I have left.

The doctor did take a swab to make sure there wasn't an overgrown of yeast or bacterial. Results might be in by the end of the week. The only recommendation she gave me was to apply Vaseline to manage the dryness.

        Sarah001,
It definitely isn't an STI issue as I'm in a monogamous relationship with my husband and there's no question of cheating on either side. We'll see what the lab results will be by the end of the week!

          UPDATE #2
So I didn't hear from my doctor so I assume that nothing showed up on the swab. I've been applying Vaseline to the vaginal area, not wearing underwear, and only wearing skirts and dresses as pants are irritating at this point. Although I am feeling better, the vulva is still quite irritated. Today I noticed that the outer lips are turning white, which I've never seen before. I've always thought it was a nice healthy pink except when irritated and then it was red and swollen. Has anyone else experienced something like this? I admit I don't usually look at the vaginal area so I'm not sure if it's looked like this at any other time. My husband said that he's never seen my vulva with patches of white...Help!

Lichen Sclerosis can produce patches of white, google it and see if that's what you're seeing on yourself.

Yes, I found that online too but after I washed the vaseline residue, the white blotches disappeared. Although they're often not of much help I'm just going to make an appointment with my doctor again. I'm wondering if perhaps the white was caused by yeast affecting the skin? I finished the antibiotics given to me for bacterial vaginitis (even though that's not what I have) and I think it may have triggered a yeast infection. Being a woman can suck sometimes, it's so complicated!

FOR THOSE WHO MIGHT STILL BE READING THIS

So my symptoms almost completely disappeared and I thought I was in the clear. The burning was almost completely gone while I had my period. Yesterday the discomfort returned and I can only think that perhaps I'm allergic to toilet paper? I've been using different tissues in an effort to figure things out but no luck. I think I'm going to back to the doctors...sigh...

I can relate to your problems, I've been suffering from burning and irritation in the vulvar for 6 months now and nothing I've tried has helped. I sometimes find my period lessens symptoms but I think that's because it creates some moisture in the area and like you I use vaseline to help with the dryness. I've switched to white toilet paper as it contains no dyes but it hasn't helped me. I use 100% organic cotton panty liners and cotton underwear but still no help and I avoid all soaps and bubble baths and use non bio wash powder but again no help. It's worth trying all these things just in case though but usually when there's an allergy present itching is the main symptom, burning is usually not allergy related on its own but notice I say usually so it's still possible.

Is there anything to see on the vulva now? Did your swabs come back ok?
