Pain when inserting a tampon--first time user

Hi I'm new here and relatively young at 14, and I really need help with tampons.

I need to use them because I'm a swimmer. So, what happens is I can insert the applicator up until my fingers reach my body, but when I press on the applicator to further insert the tampon, it hurts REALLY bad. It's a relatively sharp pain deep in my vagina.

I've tried tons of different angles and both cardboard and plastic applicators...and it's all the same. Any suggestions?

I think you're inserting it too far you're vaginal canal probably hasn't grown long enough yet and you're probably hitting your cervix which is causing the pain haha. Try pressing the applicator 3/4 of the way in instead of all the way for a day before you try swimming with it to make sure it won't fall out.

Also, are you inserting it while actually on your period or are you doing it when you're not bleeding, just for practice?

I've used tampons for years and still feel uncomfortable with them UNLESS I'm already on my period.

It would be really strange if I hadn't grown enough yet...I'm fourteen and about average height and everything :?

I am on my period right now and I only try it while I am (; My mom is getting me some non-applicator ones tomorrow. Anyone have experience with those?

Yeah the ones that you just have to push in yourself? I bought one of those (by accident) recently and they're... alright... Would probably be even better for you cuz you can control exactly how far they go in. I'm iffy about them cuz I get paranoid they're not in far enough and will fall out.
