abnormal pap smear
hi, I'm 21 & I recently had a pap smear & I received the results in the mail & said I had an abnormal pap smear. what does that mean? I'm very worried because I started to Google it & cervical cancer is what scared me the most. The letter also said that a colposcopy exam will be needed to be done to evaluate my abnormal pre-cancerous pap smear results. Does that mean that they have found pre-cancerous cells? Please give me some feedback, I'm very nervous. -
Don't worry, most women have at least one abnormal pap in their lives.
It could be anything from an odd yeast, or if you had sex a day or so prior to your pap, etc. I've had an abnormal pap, went in for the colposcopy, and it came back fine. Don't stress, I'm sure you'll be fine. Although, I will warn you that it is probably the least pleasant exam I've ever had. It didn't hurt, was just very... weird.

An abnormal pap just means there's something in there that, well, not normal. lol I don't know the science behind it, so I won't pretend. I do know that I've always been told to abstain from sex 48 hours before a pap to help insure that it doesn't impact the results. That's about as far as my knowledge goes.

As I said, the experience was unpleasant, but everything came back normal. Although, it probably would have been better if the doctor had told me what he was going to do before he did it. They used vinegar to sterilize before the scraped my cervix. The vinegar stung a little, but more because I didn't have warning. The scraping was uncomfortable as well. Let your doctor know that you are nervous before they begin, and ask them to tell you what they are going to do before they do it, that way you aren't surprised.Comment
