    Polycystic ovaries, but not PCOS?

    Hi there

I've just come back from having a trans-vaginal scan (due to painful, heavy periods) and was told that I have Polycystic Ovaries - my ovaries 'are covered in follicles on both sides.'

I've been told I need a blood test to see if I have PCOS. I've looked at all the symptoms of PCOS though and I have virtually the opposite of every one; I'm slightly underweight (as opposed to overweight), my periods are heavy and painful (not scanty or absent), I have no hair loss or excessive hair and I've never had acne, so although obviously I'm not a doctor I definitely think that PCOS can be pretty much ruled out, which leaves the question though, why are my ovaries covered in cysts?

I'm 30 and I started my periods aged 15 and they were fine at first, then from aged 17 onwards I'm virtually bedridden in agony on the first day and have to wear a towel at night they're so heavy.

They've always been regualr this past year they're been around 4 days early or late.

Any one any ideas? I'm abit worried whats wrong with me!

    Thank you, Joanne xx

My mother had this issue...but did not have PCOS. Once she was done having children she had a hysterectomy because she continually had cyst covered ovaries, some small, some large and painful.

Are you on birth control of any kind?

It may..it may not...depending on the situation. Just be prepared that your doctor will very likely recommend it.
