    not sure what to do

I have been on the pill for 8+ years now. I have never been good about always taking all my pills or taking them at the same time. Even with this my period has always been the same. I have only gotten better at taking my pills to the point that i was only late taking my pills twice last month, which should not have changed my period at all given my history. My period acted like it was going to start a day early but stopped. Then started but very light and only lasted about 36 hours and never got heavy at all. about 12 hours later it started heavy but only lasted about 12 hours then done. 5 days after that I spotted for a few hours. 10 days later i have light spotting for 2 days. Now my period is due again. It was suppose to start Thursday night or Friday morning but Didnt start until Saturday morning and it started very light and has stayed that way for the last 36 hours, but lighter then last time. Like so light that I feel like I could get away without anything and not even see a spot on my underwear.
I took a HPT this morning and it was negative.
I am concerned that this could be a false negative and I am due to start my pill again tomorrow. If I cant get a hold of my doctor I dont know if I should take my pill or not.
I am also very concerned because I had a close friend on the same pill but she took it same time every day (like she set an alarm) and she still got pregnent. She recently had a miscarriage and the doctor felt the pill caused the issues that caused her to loose the baby and that this isnt the first time he had seen this.
I just dont know what to do.

If you are concerned that you took the test too soon, read the fine print on your test. Most of them will tell you in big text how long before your period they are effective, but you have to look closely for how long after a given sex act they are effective. Something like 17 days is pretty standard. You should also look closely at any future tests you take - even the slightest activity on the pregnancy line is a positive. However, don't go digging in the trash for your old test - after a test is used and starts to age, the pregnancy line can darken without contact with any hormones.

If you are willing to use condoms for a month, you could put off starting your next pack until you're comfortable with the answer you're getting from the pregnancy test. Before you do this, though, give your prescribing doctor a call and see what s/he says. S/he may ask you to come in to the office for a blood test.

Im not sure about too soon because the period before the current one was off. As for sexual activity, my Boyfriend and I are rather active on the days we are together which is 3 or 4 days a week so I am all over the place on time frames. That is why I am so confused. I am hoping to be able to get a hold of my doctor tomorrow but the condoms for a month might be a good idea either way.
I would like to change the pill I am on because of the issue my friend had and the issues I have heard reported

There's no harm in just not starting the new pack and using a different method of BC (in this case, probably condoms) while you're waiting to get a new Rx.
