How do I keep from getting a UTI after my period?

Okay so every time I get my period I have symptoms of a UTI for several days, and every time I've gone to the doctor the test has come back positive. I haven't been able to get in to see a new primary care doctor yet and my old one is a pediatrician who doesn't know what to do. Most of the information I can find about frequent UTI's has to do with having sex or menopause. I'm twenty and a virgin, so I don't think either of those things apply to me. I keep myself clean and drink lots of cranberry juice (not because I'm paranoid I honestly just like it). I'm pretty healthy except that I have an, as of yet unidentified, neurological condition that causes muscle spasms. Does anyone know what I can do to prevent getting a UTI?

I think the cranberry helps to resolve it, not necessarily to prevent it, right? As I understand it the infection comes from something foreign going into the urethra. I asked my cousin, who's an OBGYN, about this a while ago because of my wife getting them. She told me that women are more prone to get them just because of their physiology. The urethra is shorter.

One of the things we've tried to do over the years is to get my wife to urinate after we're intimate. Maybe you could try to figure out if there's anything you're doing that could possibly be introducing something into your urethra - maybe the way you use your pads? Then make sure you're flushing yourself out. I think that just plain water is ideal. Maybe you could drink more during your cycle.

See if your pediatrician will refer you to a Urologist. Since you are in Austin, there should be very good ones associated with UT. Based on my limited knowledge, the usual therapy is low dose daily antibiotics for chronic UTIs, but there are also antibiotic resistant strains. An experienced Urologist will know how to culture the bacteria and suggest the best course of treatment. Good luck to you.
