Having your first gyno exam is scary to think about. I had my first exam last year, and I was terrified. I did get a breast exam, and yes you have to strip totally naked, but they do give you a gown and sheet. My boyfriend took me, and he held my hand throughout the entire thing, which made me less nervous and relax a little more. It's not the most comfortable thing to be honest, but it really wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. However, I wasn't a virgin, but I'm not sure that really makes a difference. I was very thankful that my doctor was a female, so I was a little more comfortable. I was expecting it to be very painful, but what I was imagining was far worse than how it actually felt. The best piece of advice I can give you is to just relax. It makes it easier for you to open up. I'm sure they'll provide you with one, but I do know that you're supposed to have a maxi pad for afterwards.

How old were you first gyno exam: 20
          You were a virgin: No
Your doctor is: Female (nurse practitioner)
Who was in the room besides the doctor: No one, just me and the nurse
Wear you totally naked or just your bottom: Totally Naked, but had a gown on
Given a gown or sheet: Gown
Did you get a breast exam: Yes
Did you get a pelvic exam: external/internal/non - External and internal (they do every time)
Did you get a pap smear: Yes
Were you comfortable during the exam: Yes
What the worst part of the exam: Wasn't that bad. Just the anticipation.

I've done this for almost 9 years now. It's a piece of cake! you go in there, the nurse takes your blood pressure and listens to your pulse just like any other appointment, then says the doctor will be in in a few moments. THe doctor knocks on the door, talks to you for a bit and finds out your history and if you have any concerns, then they give you a gown and ask you to get undressed. They leave the room, you get undressed and put your gown on and sit on the table. Then the doctor knocks and come back in. They have you lay on your back and they'll feel your breasts for any lumps, they'll feel your stomach and ask if anything feels tender or hurts. Then they'll have you scoot down, put your feet into some stirups (with your gown on and a sheet so the only thing they see is your vagina and you don't see anything). She'll insert a metal tool and you'll hear a couple clicks (it opens you just enough for her to get a long q-tip like swap in there). She'll swab- which takes like 5 seconds. She'll take the tool out. Then she'll use a little lube and feel inside you to feel your cervix etc. And then that will be that. THey will leave the room, you'll get dressed and then she'll recap that she'll send the swap in for testing and you'll get results in the mail. You're off on your merry way.

When they insert the tool and click it open, it may feel a bit uncomfortable, but not painful. If it's painful then you need to let them know, but i've never had a painful one. It's just a little uncomfortable, but like I said it lasts for maybe a minute tops that part.

How old were you first gyno exam: 18
You were a virgin: No I was not
Your doctor is: I chose female and you can specifically ask the office if you can have a female if you feel too uncomfortable. They understand and won't be upset with you.
Who was in the room besides the doctor: A nurse was in there but it depends on the office. My office is always worried about people saying the doctor did something, so they have protection if someone accuses them of something.
Wear you totally naked or just your bottom: It depended on what they were doing. When she was checking my breasts for cancer, she had me pull down the top to teach me how to examine. Once that was done, I had to pull up the bottom.
Given a gown or sheet: I was given a very nice gown, probably better than a hospital gown in my opinion.
Did you get a breast exam: Yes I did
Did you get a pelvic exam: Yes I got everything there you can imagine. But since it was my first time, my doctor made sure to explain everything to me and let me know what she was doing.
Did you get a pap smear: Yes I did
Were you comfortable during the exam: For most of the time, yes I was. They knew that it was an embarrassing thing for some people so they make sure you are comfortable and let you know what is going on so you don't feel like someone is just looking around there.
What the worst part of the exam: The pap smear was, in my opinion, the worst. It is actually different for everyone but because I'm fairly small, and I was stressed, I was tightening around it and it didn't help me. Once I calmed a little more, it didn't feel as painful.
The doctor will bring you in and ask you a few questions before anything happens. S/he will ask you if you are a virgin and you and your family's health. This will help them be able to know what is going on and if you need anything. Don't worry about shaving, the doctors really don't care, they see those all day. I heard from one gyno that they don't even think twice about that and are more concerned about the health than how it looks. It really is nothing to be worried about, you'd rather be healthy than not know if you really are. It is fairly quick and will be over before you know it!

There is nothing to worry about in an gynecologist exam, if the nurse and the doctor are good you will be glad that you went with the exam as they help in detecting any hidden disease which you may have.
