Yeah I agree, its just those certain cases of children doing the head bob saying "you don't know me I know what I am doing!"...when they really may have no idea. That is what scares me as a potential parent.Maturity levels vary widely and there are some 14yr olds in the world who know far more about sex than some 30 yr olds. I agree with KM, a lot of it is how you raise your kids and the expectations you set. You have to be realistic, they need increasing responsibility and freedom as they get older and you have to remember that they are their own people. There are those who believe that dictionaries should not merely reflect the times but also protect English from the mindless assaults of the trendy. -
Something I think no parent wants to admit. Luckily my grandmother, who I lived with, knew this, and actually told me all the time "you're your own person".
Unfortunately, since they still live with their parents, it means there is no possible way they can decide whether or not they want something.
As long as I make sure I educate my kids to practice safe sex and to actually be in a relationship with somebody and make sure it's something you really want. If I had a son or daughter who only had sex with somebody because "they were hawt" or "I just don't want to be a virgin" you better believe I would go ballistic.
And while there was alot of unattatched sex when I was in high school, I still do believe that if you educate your kid and dont leave them ignorant, it is possible to have a mature relationship.
And although it may seem a rarity, there are kids in high school with better relationships than many adults. They call it PMS because Mad Cow Disease was already taken.

At least from my experience, alot of books I've read, and conversations with parents, alot of kids only become that way because they feel pressured. Thats the age they want to discover themselves. Alot of people just tell their kids "dont do this" and it just makes them want to do it more.
If a parent educates their children on all the possible dangers of something and how many people are affected, whether sex or drugs, the child will realise that their parents are trusting them to make the right decision.
It's reverse psychology. If a parent tries to force rules on a kid, it leaves that kid feeling powerless and the inability to control anything they do. SO they start doing what they are told not to just to have power and control over their own actions, and to spite their parents.
However, if a parent endows their child with knowledge and the power of choice, they will realize it. They will know they have the power to control themselves and dont have to do something to make them feel empowered. If a parent educates the child and then says "These are your options. This one is the best choice, but you are your own person and I am going to let you decide for yourself". They'll realize this and go "My parents are trusting me to make the right decisions for myself. I should make the right choice because I know they'll be proud".
I think the reason I never went to parties to go drinking wasn't because I didn't want to, because sometimes I did. But I was given the choice by my grandmother. And I thought to myself that "this is the right choice and is what she would want, and she trusts me to make the right decision for myself". And I did. They call it PMS because Mad Cow Disease was already taken.

I completely agree that making age of consent in the late teens instead of the early teens is not by any means right.
However, I am sure that there are times when that law is beneficial and in the end, I believe laws are there to protect the weakest. I have never heard of incidents where the older party was trialed/had to go to jail because of sexual contact with someone who was too young. In my opinion, if it was voluntary then no one should know about it. If however it was forced then the law is in place to protect the hurt party
Personally that law has always annoyed me. For generally (this relationship included) I have dated people who were 2-3 years older then me.Comment
