    Previous numbers of partners...

There seems to be - and understandably so - a lot of visitors on this site in turmoil as they obsess (sometimes to the extent it becomes unhealthy) about their lover's number of previous sexual partners. From what I've read, and what I've heard (on here), this is equally as difficult to deal with as a man and as it is for a woman. As a man who lost his virginity at 19 to a relatively experienced (hot little) 18 year old I certainly know how it can make you feel, and how hard it can be to overcome.

Even people with no prior sexual experience have confessed - again, more understandably so - to being anxious about having sex with someone who is not a virgin. This (at the risk of repetition) is completely understandably, so the feelings of apprehension are normal and absolutely nothing to worry about.

So how do I deal with it?

No one wants to be compared to someone else, especially if they feel they can't 'compete' with them on a physical level - looks, technique, physique, figure, car, ****, job, career, hair, nose, boobs, balls, bank balance, boxing ability >insert body part/character trait/physical attribute, and ad infinitum...

I suppose the worst part about this, is that as we (and it is 'we', no one else does it for us) 'compare' ourselves to our partners previous lovers we turn this ridiculous and unnecessary comparison into a full on competition. A competition which exists only in our heads - one that we'll never, ever, let ourselves win - and we stew on the fact that we'll never, ever really know the full truth and THIS, is what makes it so awful. And so very pointless.

Whenever someone says to me they're concerned about a partners ex (and people always feel a compulsion to tell me their problems, my mum says it's because I've got a kind face), I ask them 'if he/she is so great, why aren't they still together?'. I'm always prepared for the retort 'he/she dumped him/her' so I say, 'maybe you're in the same league as them but you just can't see it?'. There is often a huge disparity between way we perceive ourselves and the way others perceive us. That's why it's so much easier to 'big up' a friend to a perspective partner than it is to do it for ourselves.

If your ex's were so great, wouldn't you attempt to go crawling back to them? Even in cases where I've heard of men having sexual problems like premature ejaculation or erectile dysfunction their GF's still chose not to go back to ex partners or even look for new partners in an attempt to make up for the 'shortfall'. A woman in love, being treated well is a happy one, unlikely to stray.
Sex alone can never be the glue which holds a relationship together. If anything working through sexual 'complications' and 'teething problems' together will actually strengthen the bond between two people, subsequently adding more bricks to the foundation which the relationship is built upon.

If you feel a serious and unrelenting compulsion to know every minute detail about your partners sexual history, then I'm sorry, but your going to hear things you don't like. Get ready for it, I doubt it will anywhere near as pretty as she or he is.

Your partner HAS given - and received - pleasure from someone else, someone who wasn't you. If you can't deal with this then maybe it's best not to ask. Remind yourself that whatever it was that brought the two of them together, wasn't enough for them to remain together as lovers and/or partners. He or she left their life for a reason, and you entered it, and are in it NOW for a reason too. It could quite well have been someone else, but it's not, they chose you; you chose each other, they're great aren't they? They could have chosen someone else, easily, couldn't they? But they chose you. Never be ashamed to remind yourself of this fact.

In my experience people who demand details don't want facts, they want reassurance. If your partner is having a hard time dealing with your past then be sensitive to their needs and downplay your past, there's nothing to be gained from upsetting someone by disclosing unnecessary information which can do nothing but serve to make them insecure and unhappy. If you find yourself in the position (excuse the pun) where your partner is a virgin, and they've chosen you to share the experience with then please, be sensitive to this fact. Casually mentioning ex's and alluding to previous sexual encounters can be hurtful - be on your best behavior!

When downplaying your past, I'm not saying lie outright and say you're a virgin, but there's no need to tell your boyfriend about the man who &*^%$ you all night on the beach in Kavos if he'll have a nervous breakdown about it. At the same time if you've got an insecure GF she doesn't need to know about the girl you met last summer in Tenerife with no gag reflex who swallows.

Sex like that is fun, meaningless and perfunctory and as most will learn has no bearing on a loving relationship and these kind of acts tend to fade into insignificance when we fall in love. I've done both (although I'm much more of a 'relationship person') and I can attest that sex doesn't get much better than when you're in a relationship with someone you love and cherish.

I think white lies are absolutely acceptable, and sometimes necessary in order to protect someone's feelings. Don't be afraid to use them if needs be, and if you demand answers, don't be angry or upset when you hear them.

If you demand answers from your partner, answers that deep down you don't really want to hear the answers to, don't be surprised if your partner does choose to leave bits and pieces on the cutting room floor. After all, you don't really want answers, do you? You want reassurance and to be told that you're the best, and you may well be, but if you ease up, relax, and be grateful that you're benefiting from the experience that person acquired from someone who is likely now highly insignificant to them, then you may just become the coolest, too.

There is a difference between having issues with sexual past and actually talking about it. I think most people (at least the ones I have associated with) are completely understanding and fine with it. My husband even likes the experience I bring. But talking about it is a big no no for him. He loves the person I am and what makes me the person I am but he doesn't want to think about me with other people. If somebody has issue with your past, then that is not the right person for you. If talking about it will raise problems, then definitely don't talk about. Just because you accept it, doens't mean you have to like it.

Always tread lightly when talking about sexual pasts. You need to be aware of how your partner will take it. Some people get off on it while for others it makes their blood boil. Just another aspect of the relationship that needs to be navigated.

I'm (nowadays) one of the one's who gets off on it.

I tried to gear this post more towards the people asking, rather than the people being asked though.

When I was 24 I gave my boyfriend, who was 30 at the time, my virginity. I was the ninth person he's had sex with. At the time, I thought that was a high number. But as I talked to some of my friends, turns out it's not all that odd. I have a girlfriend who at the age of 27 is on number 31. I have a male friend who's 30 and on number 28.

I've always felt that I'm not "on par" with my boyfriend. I don't have the experience or the knowledge that he does. He's been having sex since he was 17. We've talked about different positions and some I just won't ask to try with him because he's "been there, tried that, didn't like it". But I also love his experience, how he can read "tells" and basically every new thing he springs on me in the bedroom, I've enjoyed and even ask for again. It made me feel safe with him, that he knew what he was doing and I would be taken care of. It helped to ease my nerves, trust him, and we have fun exploring in the bedroom.

We're both open people, he knows that I won't ask a question unless I'm prepared for the answer. When I do ask about his past, I'm not looking to compare, but to learn. What worked for him, where he's coming from, what he likes, what he's still interested in. We both come from extremely different pasts, but learning about one another is all a part of a relationship.

As of July it'll be a year since I gave him my virginity, and my boyfriend still jokes that many of times I'm "insatiable". He's my first sex partner, so all of my experience is from being with him and just now exploring my sexual side. Whilst he is 31 and told me his "days of going 3 times in one day are behind him". I still enjoy being with him and it always means something to me when we have sex or make love. I'm always grateful that I have him, that I'm with him and that he loves me. So regardless of how many women he's been with and in what kinky manner, he's with me now and that means the world to me.

Thanks, I enjoyed reading that post. I'm 32 and my 25 year old girlfriend keeps me on my toes, I struggle to go three times a day now, too. I haven't asked her how many partners she's had, and neither has she asked me. She's insatiable too!

One thing I neglected to mention, and share some personal insight on was experience v number of partners. For example, a man who loses his virginity age 15 for example, and has 30 one night stands by the time he's 21, which have actually had sex less times than a girl who loses her virginity aged 19 and stays with the guy in a stable, sexual relationship until she's 21. Assuming the girl's partner is quite experienced she'll likely pick up more from him. the guy however has had 30 sexual encounters with 30 different people, which means more experience in certain aspects, but his situation is very different. I'd bet the girl satisfied her partner more, and more times than the guy satisfied one of his 30 partners. Even if he had sex with each twice that night and once again in the morning that's still only sex 90 times, whereas the girl has had 730 days, so even her and her partner had sex every other day (conservative for two teenagers) that's still sex 365 times, plus her lover is quite experienced so he'll likely last longer, meaning more time spent having sex.

All of this is obviously highly speculative, but there are so many variables at play it's unreal. The point I'm trying to make is number of partners doesn't necessarily equate to a better lover, I've used the (hypothetical) examples above as a crude way to try and illustrate this. I hope it makes sense.

A girl I mentioned in a previous thread who I speak very openly to about sex with (who has had a LOT of partners) once told me she slept with a man in her area who had been rumored to have slept with 300 women, she said he was useless in bed. I didn't ask for details but she was not impressed at all. She contrasted his performance to that of another guy who she went on to go out with who'd slept with three or four girls and said he was a much more attentive, caring lover, and went on to start a relationship with him.

In short, it's hard to find someone to love who'll love you back, ask anyone in a singles bar.

I'm glad to hear that a particular number of previous partners isn't standing in the way of compatibility and stopping you enjoy everything a happy, loving relationship has to offer.

For me I'm just not interested in how many sexual partners my SO has had, I've only ever known the number when it was 0! I'm happy and accepting of sexual pasts, I don't want or need to know about them unless it's relevant and I see nothing to gain from knowing numbers, partly because as Budda says above it often bears no relation to their talent or experience.

I have found that some things I thought I hated in the past I love with my SO and vice versa.

This is a very good point that so many fail to consider. The whole numbers game is quite silly in my opinion. I'm a perfect example...as I was with the same guy for 5 years. He was the 3rd person I had intercourse with. But we did every time we saw each other sometimes multiple times. In 5 years, that adds up to ALOT of sex in a lot of difference ways and a lot of different places. A girlfriend of mine had been with 3 times the people I had at that time, but knew far less about GOOD sex than I did because I was far more experienced. Her partner number was higher, my actual number of encounters were higher.

All I pulled from this is that I'm obviously "off" a bit, I guess.

My first partner was pretty experienced but I wasn't nervous about it at all. He was 22, I was 18. He knew I was a virgin, I didn't try to hide that, didn't wave it around like a banner either. It was what it was. It went well. It wasn't awkward, it wasn't bad, it wasn't earth-shattering, it wasn't particularly painful. We both enjoyed ourselves.

My partner now (my fiancee) was less experienced than I was (he's a year and a half older than I am). He was anxious about that. I didn't care. I would have been even happier if he was even LESS experienced than he already was. I got to teach him what I like, how I like it. He wasn't with a girl enough to burn what THEY liked into his head, so that didn't come into our relationship.
The only thing that really bothers me is WHY my partner had sex with the one girl he had sex with. It was done before we were really together (we were best friends, and it started to build to the point we kind of saw it turning into a relationship) so he could have experience and "not suck" for me. >_< I found that reason out long after I knew he had sex, and again, I wish even more it never happened because I didn't care if he sucked! The more teaching and practicing we'd get to do! haha

:-\ I just don't see the reason people would be that self-conscience about it, we all started somewhere...and it's fun to learn and practice!

Being self conscious on being inexperienced, I think this is normal. From my own situation; my boyfriend's son was conceived from his second threesome with his then girlfriend and her best friend. At 19 he was dating a 32 year old, she was a submissive and asked him about being a dom. He read a book about dom/sub and the psyche of it all and he understood and connected with it and found that it is indeed a part of him, leaking a bit into every day life. (We still see each other as equals, so no I won't be any 'live in sub', that's not what either of us want.) He told me that if we do end up trying to have sex in the rain I'll have to wear a skirt so it'll be quick. (I personally love the rain and would like to try it, he doesn't like getting wet and doesn't want to hunt for a place that we could do it. The subject seemed dreaded for him so I don't bring it up anymore.) He does not like sex in a car because there's not enough room and he feels crammed. He has had some one nighters in the past, but he's also been in three serious relationships before me that lasted for years. He's not a stranger to being in love and wanting to make someone happy. Of learning what the woman before him wants and likes and being with her.

Our conversations do not go into which of his previous lovers liked what, but I am an extremely curious being and I ask him how he knows certain things, if he's tried this or that (usually things I want to try and I want his take on it), and then I learn more of his sexual past. Such as that as a teen he thought he was small in the pants so he worked tremendously hard on his oral skills. The longest he's gone giving oral was an hour until she was pleading and begging for him to stop.

All of this was odd to take, considering he's my only experience. But I choose to view it as his experience helps us out. I am fully understanding that every lover is different. He has to learn about me just as I have to learn about him. While he may know more on how to faster learn about me, what to look for and what hints to take to try something; this is something I'm just catching onto. Sometimes me asking questions of "how exactly does this work? what is this used for?" I feel like an extreme novice even though he's always willing to explain things to me. I guess I sometimes feels that this is information I should know, and I would be more on his level sexually if I did. I do want to be able to please him, I want to make him happy, just as anybody who cares about someone does. But lacking the knowledge, the know-how, sometimes it makes me feel inadequate to him. I feel behind in a subject that maybe I should know more on. But we are both understanding of why I don't know the information that he does. And in the end, I am most gratefully happy that I waited for him to be my first.
