    Women and masturbation

As this has become a hot topic in another post, I thought it needed its own thread. The study I quote is for the US is Das, A. (2007). Masturbation in the United States. Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, 33(4), 301-317. doi:10.1080/00926230701385514

Abstract: Using data from the nationally representative National Health and Social Life Survey, this study queried the correlates of masturbation in the United States in 1992. Among those aged 18–60, 38% of women and 61% of men reported any masturbation over the preceding year. The system of factors underlying masturbation was similar for both genders, consistent with a convergence in gender patterns of sexual expression in the United States. Among both women and men, masturbation responded to a stable sexualized personality pattern, catalyzed by early-life factors and manifested in current sexual traits. Strikingly, the masturbation-partnered sex linkage, often conceptualized either as compensating for unsatisfying sex or complementing a satisfactory sex life, appeared to be bimodal for both genders. For some, masturbation complemented an active and pleasurable sex life, while among others, it compensated for a lack of partnered sex or satisfaction in sex.

Research method: Among the sampled individuals, 3432 completed the interview, yielding a final response rate of 78.6%. Of these, 3116 (1769 women and 1347 men) gave usable answers to the masturbation questions.

Here is a study in the UK. Similar results: Gerressu, M., Mercer, C. H., Graham, C. A., Wellings, K., & Johnson, A. M. (2008). Prevalence of Masturbation and Associated Factors in a British National Probability Survey. Archives Of Sexual Behavior, 37(2), 266-278. doi:10.1007/s10508-006-9123-6

A stratified probability sample survey of the British general population, aged 16 to 44 years, was conducted from 1999 to 2001 ( N = 11,161) using face-to-face interviewing and computer-assisted self-interviewing. We used these data to estimate the population prevalence of masturbation, and to identify sociodemographic, sexual behavioral, and attitudinal factors associated with reporting this behavior. Seventy-three percent of men and 36.8% of women reported masturbating in the 4 weeks prior to interview (95% confidence interval 71.5%–74.4% and 35.4%–38.2%, respectively). A number of sociodemographic and behavioral factors were associated with reporting masturbation. Among both men and women, reporting masturbation increased with higher levels of education and social class and was more common among those reporting sexual function problems. For women, masturbation was more likely among those who reported more frequent vaginal sex in the last four weeks, a greater repertoire of sexual activity (such as reporting oral and anal sex), and more sexual partners in the last year. In contrast, the prevalence of masturbation was lower among men reporting more frequent vaginal sex. Both men and women reporting same-sex partner(s) were significantly more likely to report masturbation. Masturbation is a common sexual practice with significant variations in reporting between men and women.

Not a question. Just putting it out there for debate since in the other post some folks didn't believe the low numbers for women was true.

SP346, for the benefit of us 'mere mortals', you may yield a better response if you do us the favor of breaking this information down and translating it into more user friendly bites, that way the information can be processed and digested more easily by everyone. x

In simplistic terms, in the US and UK, about 1/3 women masturbate whereas about 60% men do.

LOL....are canadian women different, or hornier then? Or are the men lazier? masturbation (my myself, anyways) still happens often, even though my man is more than sexually able to please me, I still find the time to masturbate.

            Very interesting SP!

lol who knows. I am sure there would be a study somewhere on PubMed or the Journal of Sex Research that would have a Canadian study to read about. They just did not bother to poll another country for these studies lol, that is a lot of work.

I can believe those numbers for women. Maybe 20% to 30% of women don't orgasm at all. I would suspect that most of those don't masturbate. Amongst the highly religious, I would expect lower rates of masturbation. A lot of women may expect their SO to bring them to orgasm. Etc.

Apparently you've never seen American porn - cause a lot of women masturbate. I certainly do - sometimes so many times in a day that my clit is to sore to do anything..... And honestly, in the long-term relationships I've been in I've always been the hornier partner.

I wouldn't have found those numbers plausible until a very hot, ****ty girl once admitted to me that she had never climaxed, or even masturbated until she was 25.

It's actually the male statistics I find harder to believe, I don't understand how only 60% of men masturbate, maybe the other 40% are sexually active and do not feel the inclination to because their partners keep them satisfied?
